"Interesting Drug"
collectors appendix
UK 7" [HMV POP1621]
Most copies of the UK 7" come in a rigid glossy sleeve opening from the side, with a semi-circle cut-out portion on the back for better grip on the record (view front and back artwork from the menu on the left). A very small number are found in a paper sleeve that is identical to the card one. The record has a solid centre and pink vintage His Master's Voice labels with black text and logos. A His Masters Voice logo is found at the top, publishing and label credits on the left, "45 R.P.M." graphics, catalogue number and production credits on the right, and title at the bottom.

UK 12" [HMV 12POP1621]
The front artwork of the regular 12" is slightly different to that of the 7" format (see left). The back is similar, the only difference being the positions of the His Master's Voice logo and the catalogue number which were moved to the right side, next to the barcode (see left). The record is slipped inside a glossy red die-cut inner bag. It has pink vintage His Master's Voice labels with black text: His Masters Voice logo at the top; publishing and label credits on the left; "45 R.P.M." graphics, catalogue number and production credits on the right; titles at the bottom.

UK 12" etched [HMV 12POPS1621]
There are 3 variations of this item for completists to collect. The intended edition features two songs on side A while side B shows an etched drawing of Oscar Wilde and of the words "Motor Cycle Au Pair Boy" where the musical grooves would normally be. However, mispressed copies exist with only the title track on side A. All variations feature the brown version of the artwork, as seen from the menu on the left. Most copies have a dark brown round sticker on the front with the words "Special Etched Disc" in gold, but in some cases that sticker is white with the same words in black. The back of the sleeve is maroon brown with gold text, including a drawing/caricature of Oscar Wilde with sunflower (view left). The record is slipped inside a black poly-lined paper inner sleeve although copies in a white paper inner sleeve have been reported. The side A label is completely different of the labels of the regular 12". It is black with silver text in the bottom half and a red His Master's Voice picture-logo in the top half, just like the labels on the UK "Viva Hate" album. As the two tracks on this edition are found on side A, they are both mentioned on the side A label, even for mispressed copies with only one song. The b-side label is all black with SPM29 B in small letters stamped at the bottom.

UK CD5 [HMV CDPOP1621]
The cd-single comes in a thin jewel case. The front artwork for Morrissey's cd-singles is often cropped comparatively to the 7"/12" artwork, but in this case it actually shows a bit more than the vinyl formats (view left). The spine and back are vermilion red with deep grey text. On the spine are found Morrissey's name, "Interesting Drug" and the catalogue number. The back features the Euro catalogue number, the barcode in a pinkish red box, Morrissey's name in the same font as on the front, "Interesting Drug", as well as a His Master's Voice logo in a paler shade of grey. The inner side of the insert has a background of repeated pale grey fern-like symbols, with the lyrics to the title track printed over in dark grey (view left). Personnel and various other credits are listed on the left side in medium grey, and a compact disc logo, a label code, the His Master's Voice logo and the catalogue number on the right side, also in medium grey. The disc surface is pale blue with the background pattern uncoloured (silver). The catalogue number, Morrissey's name and the title track are listed at the top, the b-sides and a few credits at the bottom, the European catalogue number, the label code and a His Master's Voice logo on the left, and a compact disc logo on the right.
UK CMS [HMV TCPOP1621]
The cassette shows on its front the 7" variation of the artwork with the leftover space at the bottom filled with the background pattern usually found on the back of the other formats, with the title in blue at the very bottom (view left). The spine is solid vermilion red with Morrissey's name in the same font and shade of blue as on the front, above "Interesting Drug", also in dark blue. The catalogue number is given at the top, and a His Master's Voice logo is found at the bottom, both in pale grey. The background pattern is repeated on the back. A barcode in red box is found there in the middle, between publishing credits on the left, EMI credits on the right and the Euro catalogue number beneath. The background background extends from the front throughout the insert's three extra panels. All the text over those three panels is in the same dark blue as on the front. The first panel has the lyrics to the title track. On the second panel are found various credits relating to the recording and packaging. The track listing is found on the third panel, with a His Master's Voice logo at the top and production credits at the bottom (view left). The cassette itself is made of smokey clear plastic with pale grey text printed directly onto it. It features a white His Master's Voice logo in the top right corner.

UK 7" jukebox [HMV POP1621]
This item is just like the stock 7" described above but at the centre is a large hole for jukebox play. The record does not usually come in a picture sleeve unless it was paired with one a posteriori. Some copies are circulated with the jukebox titles card which is white with black text (Interesting Drug / Morrissey / Such A Little Thing) and a logo on the left.

UK 12" promo [HMV 12POPDJ1621]
Each one of Morrissey's first six solo singles was promoted with the help of a 12" in a glossy record bag, each title of a different colour. The sleeve for the promo 12" of single #4, "Interesting Drug", is vermilion red (view left). It has Morrissey's name at the top in white, in the same font used on the commercial single. Below his name is a white His Master's Voice logo. One side is die-cut to expose the a-side label. The other side has the catalogue number in the top right corner in a small white font, and a cut-out opening at the top to facilitate access to the record. The labels are white with a pink 'A' or 'B' taking up the whole space. Each side's track listing is printed in red in the top half and the promo's catalogue number in the lower half in a smaller font.

UK 12" promo [HMV SPM29]
Morrissey put together a second, more limited promo 12" for this single, a promotional counterpart to the etched 12" described above. This beautiful item is very appreciated by casual collectors just as much as the more dedicated ones. The record shows on one side the etched Oscar Wilde 'caricature' also found on the etched commercial 12" (view left). The musical side features "Interesting Drug" and nothing else. The record has a black label on the latter side with only "Motor Cycle Au Pair Boy", "Interesting Drug" and "SPM29" in a white fin-de-siècle type of font taking the whole space (view left). It is slipped inside a glossy black card sleeve die-cut on both sides (even though the etched side does not have a label to expose). This sleeve has a cut-out opening at the top on one side for better grip on the record. It has no image or text on it, which means that Morrissey's name does not appear anywhere on the packaging or the record itself (although, for the aware, the catalogue number is a combination of his initials and his age at the time of release).
SPM 29 A-1U-1-1
UK video promo [Chop Em Out]
The one-track promo video sent to media ahead of the release of this single comes in a black hardshell case with paper insert in the display window. This generic insert is white with grey text. Its front shows a Chop Em Out Optimedia logo at the top and contact info at the bottom. Morrissey's name and "Interesting Drug" was printed in the middle section on the front as well as on the sticker label on the top of the videocassette. A white Capitol Parlophone sticker on the spine gives release information and perhaps plugger contact info (confirmation needed). Some copies have a white sticker on the front with some plugger's contact information.
UK promo poster 51cm x 76cm (20" x 30")
View here (better image needed). An unfortunate particularity of this very beautiful poster is that the gold colour wears off easily and stains fingers or the back of any other poster that may have been placed over it. Nowadays it is impossible to find a copy without any fingerprints in the gold finish (it actually is near impossible to find a copy in any condition).
UK promo poster 100cm x 150cm (40" x 60")
Subway-size variation on the above poster. The text layout is likely slightly different, and the gold finish also rubs off on contact. Image needed.
UK instore display piece
This is a promo-only 14" diameter instore display, printed on both sides with back to back replicas of the 7" labels. It was probably meant to be hung. The labels are those of a 7" with push-out centre despite the fact that this title was never released otherwise than with a solid centre. View a-side (better image needed).
UK advert 40cm x 30cm (16" x 12")
View here. The text at the bottom lists the b-sides for the 7" and 12" formats.

UK 7" test pressing [HMV POP1621]
Two different test pressings have been reported:
- white label test pressing
The a-side label has "POP 1621 A&B-1U" in handwriting and is date-stamped "15 FEB 1989". The record comes in a generic paper record bag.
- pale pink label test pressing
The a-side label has "POP 1621 A/B-1U" in handwriting and is date-stamped "22 MAR 1989". The record comes in a black die-cut paper record bag.
POP 1621 A-1U-1-1 / POP 1621 B-1U-1-1
UK 12" test pressing [HMV 12POP1621]
The test pressing for the regular 12" format has pale pink labels. Some copies have nothing printed or stamped on them, others have the matrix number handwritten and "15 FEB 1989" stamped. The record comes in a white paper poly-lined die-cut inner bag with rounded corners.
12 POP 1621 A-1U-1-1 / ??
UK 12" test pressing [HMV 12POPS1621]
The test pressing for the etched 12" has plain white labels with nothing printed on them on the music side, and the regular etching on the reverse. The music side features two songs, as it should.
UK 12" test pressings of etching [HMV SPM29B]
At least two different test pressings of the Oscar Wilde etching (see etched 12" description above) have made it into the hands of collectors. Neither have any music on the reverse.
- One test pressing looks like the final product, but the label at the centre of the record is white instead of black. It comes inside a white die-cut card sleeve with handwriting on it, such as "Engraved image disc test pressing", the catalogue number and the date "15.2.89". The inner sleeve is made of white paper with rounded corners.
- An alternate test pressing shows Oscar Wilde in a kidney shaped etched bubble, so the image inside is a negative of the final version, black over etched grey. This variation has no label at its centre, only a white sticker with the handwriting "Experimental etch to try & improve positive image of Oscar Wilde 22.2.89". It also comes inside a white die-cut card sleeve. The text from the sticker, including the date, is repeated on its front. The inner sleeve is again made of white paper with rounded corners.
UK 10" acetate for 7" [CBS Studios]
This is a one-sided cellulose lacquer acetate for the 7", set inside a 10" surround. It has a CBS Studios label on side A with logo and address at the top. The leftover space was filled in handwriting with the following information: "A", "Morrissey", "31/1/89", "Interesting Drug 3:27". The b-side has no label because there is no music on that side. Information is needed about the sleeve in which this is circulated.
UK 12" acetate [CBS Studios]
The 12" acetate has music on both sides. What was particularly exciting about this item until the release of the 2010 redesigned edition of "Bona Drag" was the inclusion of "The Bed Took Fire" on side B, a song Morrissey decided to remove from the track listing of this single at the last minute. A retouched version was released the following year as "At Amber", and then in 2010, after having been leaked on the internet for many years, Morrissey finally decided to give the song a proper release. The labels have CBS Studios logo and address at the top. The leftover space beneath that was filled in handwriting with the following information: the side letter, "Morrissey", "31/1/89" and that side's track listing including song lengths. Information about the sleeve is needed.
UK early in-house cassette
This cassette appears to feature this single's two originally intended b-sides: "Such A Little Thing Makes Such A Big Difference" and "The Bed Took Fire". The cassette tape is a commercial type II TDK SF90 bearing a sticker label on side A with "THING, BED" in Morrissey's handwriting. It doesn't not seem to come with a case or insert.
Australia 7" [EMI Australia EMI2231]
The Australian 7" sleeve opens from the top and unlike the British edition, there is no cut-out portion on the back for better grip on the record. The front shows the usual 7" variation of the artwork (view left). The back is modelled on the back of the UK 7", but a number of changes were made: the His Master's Voice logo and catalogue number in the top left corner were replaced with a EMI logo and EMI Music Group Australia credit in the bottom right corner; the barcode was dropped and the Australian catalogue number added to the top right corner; the credits on the right lack the EMI address in London; "Interesting Drug" was added at the top of the lyrics. The labels are beige with black text, a red EMI logo at the bottom and red legal credits around the edges.
Australia CMS [EMI Australia TCEMI-2231]
The insert of the Australian cassette single shows the usual artwork on the front, over a white background including release information and catalogue number (view left). The spine and back are white with black text. The spine only shows the catalogue number, Morrissey's name and the title in a plain font, plus a Dolby logo. The back gives the track listing plus a few warnings. The insert has three extra panels. On the first one are found the lyrics to the title track. The second one features the personnel and recording credits. The third one gives the track listing, songwriting credits and all label credits. The cassette is made of clear plastic with pale grey text printed onto it. A EMI logo is found sideways on the left and a XDR logo in the bottom right corner. The track listing does not appear on the cassette.
Canada 12" [Sire/Reprise 92 12320]
The Canadian 12" shows the usual 12" artwork on the front. The back of the sleeve is modelled on the back of the regular UK 12", but the text is pale blue instead of grey and many minor changes were made to the contents: "Interesting Drug" was added in blue at the top of the lyrics; there is no barcode, catalogue number or His Master's Voice logo in the top right corner; the credits on the right were reduced to the first 16 lines and moved up; beneath them were added many lines of credits in black, including some for Sire and WEA Canada, as well as blue Sire and Reprise logos and the Canadian barcode in a white box. Copies that are still sealed have an oval red sticker on the front stating "Specially-Priced Maxi-Single" and advertising the musical content. The record is slipped inside a clear anti-static inner sleeve. The labels are the usual yellow Sire ones, with blue Sire logo at the top, black Reprise logo on the left, contents and credits at the bottom, catalogue number on the right, and Sire/WEA Canada credits around the bottom edge.

Canada 12" promo [Sire/Reprise 92 12320]
As is custom in Canada, promotional 12"s are commercial ones stamped with English and French promo warnings in gold ink on the back of the sleeve.
EEC 7" [EMI 006 20 3301 7]
A 7" edition was made in the EEC for the German, Dutch and French markets, and also perhaps those of Scandinavia and other smaller countries of central Europe. The sleeve is made of paper and opens from the top. The front shows the expected 7" variation of the artwork but what makes this item appealing to non-completists, particularly the ones interested in artwork variations, is the presence of the title beneath Morrissey's name (view left). The back is significantly different to the back of the UK 7". The background pattern down the centre is still present, but this is where the similarities end. The pattern is white instead of grey and none of the credits usually found on either side remain. The lyrics usually printed over the pattern were replaced with the the track listing including songwriting credits, and a production credit, all in a large blue unrelated font. A blue EMI credit and a small white EMI/Electrola logo are found at the bottom. A barcode in white box is found in the top right corner, with beneath it the catalogue number for this 7", as well as the catalogue numbers for the 12" and cd-single, a French price code and a label code, all in white. The record has a large hole at its centre. Instead of replicating the pink labels of the UK, Electrola stuck to the blue ones with black text used on earlier Morrissey singles. A His Master's Voice logo is found at the top, "45 RPM" on the right, and a GEMA box with Stemra underneath on the left, above the European catalogue number. The titles and songwriting credits are in the bottom half. Legal credits in English and German ending with "Made In EEC" are printed along the outer edge.
EEC 12" [EMI 060 20 3301 6]
The front of the EEC 12" shows a unique layout in which Morrissey's name at the top is centered instead of being justified to the right (view left). The back of the sleeve looks like its UK counterpart, but the lyrics are printed in grey instead of blue. The barcode in the top right corner is in a white box and moved all the way up against the edge. The His Master's Voice logo next to it lacks the UK catalogue number but, strangely, it also lacks the Euro catalogue number despite the presence of the European catalogue numbers for the other formats (7", cd-single) beneath the barcode. Dutch, French and German printing and distribution credits as well as a label code were added at the bottom on the left side. The record is slipped inside a white paper inner sleeve. Although the UK labels are pink with black text, the labels here are blue with black text just like those of the previous three Morrissey 12" singles in Europe. A His Master's Voice logo is found at the top, "45 RPM" on the right, and a GEMA box with Stemra underneath on the left, above the European catalogue number. The titles and writing credits are in the bottom half. Legal credits in English and German ending with "Made In EEC" are printed along the outer edge.
§
EEC 7" [EMI 006 20 3301 7]
The discovery of this test pressing for the EEC 7" tells us that it was pressed in Germany. The record has generic white labels with black printed text: "Unverkauflich Musterplatte" on the left, the side identification on the right and legal credits around the bottom edge. The catalogue number was stamped in blue in the bottom half. The record comes inside a paper sleeve that is mostly white, with only the line "Muster zu Ihrer Information" repeated at the top in black. The record usually includes a EMI Electrola GMBH label copy sheet filled with technical information about the music and its recording.
EEC 12" test pressing [EMI 060 20 3301 6]
Information on the record is needed. The record comes in a white card sleeve with Morrissey's name and the single's three titles handwritten on the front. There is a sticker in the top left corner with the item's catalogue number printed on it.
Germany CD5 [EMI/Electrola 560 20 3301 2]
The German cd-single comes in a slimline jewel case just like its UK counterpart. It features the same cropping of the Morrissey image on the front, but adds "MAXI-CD" in small black letters in the bottom right corner. The spine and back are vermilion red with blue-grey text. The spine gives only Morrissey's name, the title and the catalogue number. The back only features the track listing plus a barcode in a white box. The inner side of the insert has the background pattern down its centre, just like the insert of the UK cd-single, but the lyrics over it were replaced with the track listing including songwriting and production credits in large blue letters. A blue EMI credit and white EMI/Electrola logo are found at the bottom. None of the grey credits and logos on either side remain. The only other text left are the catalogue numbers for the cd-single as well as those of its 7" and 12" counterparts, as well as a label code, printed in white in the top left corner. The disc is orange with a mix of blue and grey text. A grey EMI/Electrola logo and Morrissey's name in blue are found at the top, "Interesting Drug" in blue and a blue and grey EMI/His Master's Voice logo are found at the bottom, the track listing including songwriting credits in blue on the right, and various credits, catalogue numbers and logos in grey on the left side.
§
Germany promo 2-cd [EMI Electrola CDP 518 912 ]
The release of "Interesting Drug" was promoted in Germany with the inclusion of the title track on the various artists promo double-cd set titled "EMI Hot Shots Nr 7". The set comes in a thick double jewel case. The front and back artwork is mostly purple and black text over a turquoise background. A dog+gramophone logo is found on the front, above the EMI/Electrola logo. The track listing is found on the front, and repeated on the back with song lengths. The discs are silver with black text: compilation title on the left in big letters, track listing on the right.
Italy 7" [EMI Italiana 06 2033017]
The Italian 7" comes in a paper sleeve that opens from the side. The front artwork is the usual 7" variation. The back is very similar to the back of the UK 7". It differs only in the corrected catalogue number and the ES logo beneath the His Master's Voice logo in the top left corner, the additional EMI Italiana credit at the end of the ones on the right side and the small boxed black 'M' in the bottom left corner. The record has a large hole at its centre. The labels are blue with black text just like those of the EEC 7" instead of being pink like the UK labels. The differences with the EEC labels are very minor ones: the GEMA/Stemra box was replaced with their Italian counterpart SIAE, the catalogue number was changed, an EMI Italiana credit is found around the outer edge, etc. The layout of the rest of the credits was slightly changed.
Italy 12" [EMI Italiana 14 2033016]
The sleeve of the Italian 12" is made of particularly thin card and opens at the top. It shows the same artwork on the front as the EEC 12", with Morrissey's name centered instead of being justified to the right. The back is very similar to the back of the regular UK 12". The catalogue number next to the barcode was changed to the Italian one, an EMI Italiana credit was added at the end of the credits on the right side and a very small printing credit was added in the bottom left corner in black. Because of the sleeve in which this record was distributed, there is no inner sleeve, although many collectors have since added one for safer storage. The labels are blue with black text just like those of the EEC 12" instead of being pink like the UK labels. The differences with the EEC labels are very minor ones: the GEMA/Stemra box was replaced with their Italian counterpart SIAE, the catalogue number was changed, an EMI Italiana credit is found around the outer edge, etc. The layout of the rest of the credits was slightly changed.

Copies of the stock 12" were made into promotional items by being pin-stamped in the bottom left corner with the words "Campione Gratuito".
Japan CD5 [Toshiba EMI CP15-5889]
The front artwork of the Japanese cd features the brown variation of the Morrissey image, just like the etched UK 12", with a slightly different position of Morrissey's name at the top and with the EP's catalogue number printed in black in the bottom right corner (view left). The insert is folded in two, its inner side just plain white. Its back is mostly dark brown with only one column of credits and logos on the left. The credits are the ones usually found on the backs of the UK 7" and 12", reproduced here in a paler shade of brown than that of the background. A white EMI logo and credit are found at the bottom. The back artwork is the same dark brown with a mix of white and paler brown text. The paler brown background pattern occupies the middle portion of the back space (view left). The track listing is printed over it in white, in English and Japanese, above production credits. Personnel and various credits are printed in pale brown on the left of the pattern, EMI and compact discs logo are found in white on the right, and various Japanese credits are printed in white across the bottom. The obi is white with a mix of dark brown, gold and black text. Its back shows the track listing in Japanese, the barcode and more Japanese text, presumably credits or technical data. A white paper insert folded in four inside features on one side what may be a bio or an interview, with track listing at the top and cover of the "Viva Hate" album on the left, and on the other side, lyrics for the EP's five songs in English and Japanese. The disc is silver with black text all in English: EMI logo and Morrissey's name at the top above a stripe, "Interesting Drug" and compact disc logo at the bottom beneath another stripe, various credits and numbers on the left, track listing on the right.

Japan CD5 promo [Toshiba EMI CP15-5889]
Promo cds are stock ones with a white and red promo sticker on the back of the tray insert. The disc's inner ring is expected to be marked with the words "PROMO NOT FOR SALE" (confirmation needed).
Portugal 7" [EMI 20 3301 7]
The sleeve of the Portuguese 7" is made of paper and opens from the top. It has a rectangular cut-out at the back to facilitate access to the record. It features the expected 7" artwork on the front. The back differs from the back of the UK 7" by many minor details: the text is printed in a paler shade of grey, the His Master's Voice logo was moved from the top left corner to the bottom left one, the barcode is printed in white over the background colour, it has the Portuguese catalogue number beneath it plus 'A' in a circle and "Stereo", a Valentim De Carvalho logo was added at the bottom, and a small printer credit was added in the bottom left corner. The labels were modelled on the blue and black EEC ones instead of the pink UK ones, but the record has a solid centre. They also show a His Master's Voice logo at the top and "45 RPM" on the right, but feature fewer credits and Morrissey's name was given more emphasis than the song titles. The credits around the edge are in Portuguese.
USA 12" [Sire/Reprise 9 21232-0]
The American 12" shows the usual 12" artwork on the front. The back of the sleeve is modelled on the back of the regular UK 12", but many minor changes were made to the contents: "Interesting Drug" was added in blue at the top of the lyrics; there is no barcode, catalogue number or His Master's Voice logo in the top right corner; the credits on the right were reduced to the first 16 lines and moved up; beneath them were added many lines of additional credits in the same colour but in a smaller font, including some for Sire, as well as Sire and Reprise logos and the American barcode in a white box. Copies that are still sealed have an oval red sticker on the front stating "Specially-Priced Maxi-Single" and advertising the musical content. The record is slipped inside a clear anti-static inner sleeve. The labels are slight variations on the usual yellow Sire ones, with blue Sire logo at the top, black Reprise logo on the right, catalogue number on the left and contents and credits at the bottom.
USA CMS [Sire/Reprise 9 21232-4]
The American cassette has its own layout for the front artwork, different to that of the UK cassette (view left). The background pattern does not carry over the spine and back which are solid red. The spine has grey Sire and Reprise logos at the top, Morrissey's name in the same font and colour as on the front, "Interesting Drug" in grey, a blue CMS logo and the catalogue number and Dolby logo in black. The back has the barcode at the centre, with the track listing appearing above and below in blue. The address for Sire Records is printed in grey at the bottom. The insert's only extra panel features the title song's lyrics in blue over the background pattern, with publishing credits at the bottom. The reverse of the insert has grey text over white. The reverse of the extra panel lists the personnel between symbols from the background pattern. The reverse of the front panel has credits usually found on the right side of the back of the 7"/12" sleeve, plus songwriting and publishing credits. The reverse of the spine is grey with white Sire and Reprise logos. The reverse of the back has Sire and Warner credits plus Dolby information. The cassette itself is made of white plastic with black text printed onto it in black. The track listing is at the top and Sire and Reprise logos are on the left. It is expected that, just like the 12" format, the seal may have had a red oval sticker on the front advertising the contents and the fact that this is a "Specially Priced" item (confirmation needed).

USA 12" promo [Sire/Reprise 9 21232-0]
This single was mainly promoted via stock copies of the 12" format stamped with a promo warning in gold ink on the front of the sleeve. The red oval sticker advertising the single's contents which is usually found on the seal of the stock 12" was affixed directly onto the sleeve of the promo because promos were never sealed.

USA 12" test pressing [Specialty]
The American "Interesting Drug" test pressing has white Specialty Records Corporation labels featuring the company's logo at the top and printed lines below to be filled in with release information. In this particular case the handwritten information is the label ("WB" for Warner Bros), artist ("Morrissey"), matrix number (ASR') and catalogue number ("021232"). The date and title lines were not filled in. It is expected that some sort of sheet with release information (track listing, credits) may have been included inside (to be confirmed). Information on the sleeve in which this is circulated is needed.
