"Beethoven Was Deaf"
collectors appendix
UK CD [HMV CDCSD3791]
The front of the UK compact disc is similar to its LP counterpart but the image is cropped more on the front of the cd and the relative position of the text and of the His Master's Voice logo are slightly different (view left). The back follows a similar design to the back of the LP but the images of Morrissey's musicians are tinted green, the track listing is printed as a block of text instead of in list form, and the barcode is proportionally much bigger (view left). The "D:" compartment in the barcode box is left empty, the "F:" compartment has "PM520" and the "UK:" compartment has the UK catalogue number. The spines are the same brown as the back. Morrissey's name is printed in green on each of them, next to the album title in silver, with the two catalogue numbers in silver one above the other at the right end. The booklet opens on two chestnut brown pages, an empty one on the left and one filled with credits in silver on the right. These are followed by four different green tinted live shots of Morrissey sliding off the edge of a stage, each one taking two adjacent pages (view left). The first one is the same image used inside the gatefold LP sleeve. The back of the booklet is all brown with only a silver His Master's Voice logo at the very bottom, above the two catalogue numbers and one line of EMI copyright also in silver. A cropped version of the third booklet photo is reproduced on the disc's surface in the same shade of green (view left; see other international cds for interesting variations in colour). The only text found on the disc are the two silver catalogue numbers at the very bottom and the legal warning around the top edge, also in silver.
UK cassette [HMV TCCSD3791]
The UK cassette features the same image of Morrissey on its front as on the other formats, but there is no text or logo over it. Morrissey's name and the album title are over the brown background above the photo, and the His Master's Voice logo is over the background below it (view left). The spine and back are the same shade of brown with mostly grey/silver text. Morrissey's name and the album title are reproduced on the spine in the same colours and fonts as on the front, with the two catalogue numbers at the top and a His Master's Voice logo at the bottom. The back flap has a large barcode box in the right half, above three lines of manufacturing and copyright credits. To the left of it is found the "Sixteen songs performed…" line in a thick font. The insert has two fold-out panels. The first one is brown with silver text. It's upper two thirds are used for the full album credits, while the track listing is printed in a block at the bottom. The second panel shows the green tinted live shot of Morrissey found inside the gatefold LP, which also happens to be the first of four live photos shown inside the cd booklet. The latter booklet's three other green tinted live shots are reproduced on the reverse of the cassette insert, but in mirror image (view). The reverse of the spine and back flap were left brown, without any text or logo. The cassette is made of clear plastic with pale grey text printed onto it. The release identification is found at the top (but no track listing), between the catalogue numbers and EMI copyright on the left and a His Master's Voice logo in the top right corner.
UK LP [HMV CSD3791]
The UK LP sleeve is gatefold. The front of it shows a bit more of Morrissey than the front of its compact disc counterpart, and the relative position of the text and of the His Master's Voice logo are slightly different (view left). The back follows a similar design to the back of the cd but the images of Morrissey's musicians are tinted grey instead of green, the track listing is printed as a list instead of a block of text, and the barcode is proportionally much smaller (view left). The extra space means that the credits at the bottom include three additional lines (mixing, photography, sleeve) and there is a His Master's Voice logo in the bottom right corner. A green tinted live shot of Morrissey is found inside the gatefold LP. This image is the first of the four images found inside the cd booklet. The record is slipped inside a black poly-lined inner sleeve. It bears classic His Master's Voice labels which are black with most of the text in grey. A His Master's Voice logo appears at the very top above "His Master's Voice" in big red letters. The track listing, the catalogue number and various credits are found in the bottom half and a legal warning is printed around the top edge.

UK "Jack The Ripper" promo cd [HMV CDPOPDJ1632]
"Beethoven Was Deaf" was mainly promoted in the UK with the help of this promo cd and its 7" counterpart described next, both featuring two tracks from the album. Both formats feature the same unique front artwork, but it is cropped slightly differently and the text apart from Morrissey's name is relatively bigger for the cd (view left). The card sleeve opens from the side. Its back is all white except for four lines of credits at the very bottom beneath a black His Master's Voice logo and the catalogue number in reddish pink. The disc surface was modelled on vintage EMI labels which had incidentally already been used on Morrissey LPs and 7"s in the Philippines ("Suedehead", "Viva Hate", "Everyday Is Like Sunday"). The original EMI labels were beige with "EMI" in big bold red sideways letters over the left half and black text in the right half. In this case "EMI" was replaced with "HMV". The black text in the right half consists of the catalogue number printed sideways at the top, the track listing (which includes songwriting credits), Morrissey's name, a mixing credit, a Compact Disc logo, a brief EMI credit and a legal warning printed in a bold block at the bottom.
UK "Jack The Ripper" promo 7" [HMV POPDJ1632]
The 7" vinyl counterpart to the promo cd described above features the same unique front artwork, but it is cropped slightly differently and the text apart from Morrissey's name is relatively smaller than on the front of the cd (view left). The sleeve opens from the side and is indented on the back for better grip on the record. The back is all white except for four lines of credits at the very bottom beneath a black His Master's Voice logo and the catalogue number in reddish pink. The labels were modelled on the same vintage EMI labels described for the promo cd above. They are beige with "HMV" printed sideways in big bold red letters in the left half. The catalogue number is printed sideways in black 'above' the sideways "HMV". The black text in the right half consists of that side's song title (including songwriting credits), Morrissey's name, a mixing credit, a brief EMI credit and a legal warning printed in a bold block at the bottom.
UK advance cassette [Parlophone / Chop'Em Out CDP 7890612]
The release of "Beethoven Was Deaf" was preceded with the distribution of a Chop Em Out cassette featuring the complete album. Whereas Chop Em Out cassettes seem to have served in-house reference purposes for Smiths releases in 1992, this one appears to have been used for early limited promotion as the insert features a bit of promotional text. The cassette is a generic black "Chrome Super II" one looking like tapes purchased for home usage. It has plain white sticker labels on both sides with only "Morrissey" printed on them in black. The insert is a generic white Chop Em Out J-card with black text and one extra fold-out panel. Release identification, track listing for side A, the date "22-03-93", the catalogue number and a Parlophone logo appear on the front, while the track listing for side B and the five lines of 'promotional' text are found on the fold-out panel. The spine states Morrissey's name above the album title and the catalogue number. The back flap features a Chop Em Out logo and their contact information.
UK cassette sampler [Parlophone / Chop'Em Out]
This is very similar to the above item, but only features four tracks from the album: "Jack The Ripper", "The Loop", "Suedehead" and "We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful". The insert is also a generic white Chop Em Out J-card with black text, but apparently without an extra fold-out panel (confirmation needed). The front features Morrissey's name, the album title, "Album Sampler", the track listing and five lines of promo text announcing the release date and giving a bit of information about the contents and the producer (same text as on the advance cassette described above). The spine states Morrissey's name above the album title and "Album Sampler". The back flap features a Chop Em Out logo and their contact information. The cassette is presumed to be a generic black "Chrome Super II" one that looks like tapes purchased for home usage, with plain white sticker labels on both sides with "Morrissey" printed on them in black (confirmation needed).

UK promo advert (?) 56cm x 41cm (22" x 16")
View here. This item was sold as a poster, but is more likely a 2-page ad. Better image needed.
UK promo billboard (dimensions unknown)
View here (behind Morrissey). No one has ever reported owning this, but it is displayed here for reference.
UK sales presenter (dimensions unknown)
View here. This item sold as a 'sales presenter with glossy cover' presumably features the album's marketing campaign or gross/retail prices for potential retailers. Information needed.

UK reference cassette [Abbey Road]
This Abbey Road cassette served administrative in-house purposes. The insert is a generic Abbey Road one. Its front shows Morrissey's name, the album title and the track listing over the pale grey and yellow Abbey Road logo. Information on the back of the insert is needed. The spine probably shows the Abbey Road logo and release identification (confirmation needed). The tape is a chrome BASF, made of smokey transparent plastic. The white sticker labels have the black and yellow Abbey Road logo on the left and Morrissey's name and the album title are printed on them.
UK reference cd-r [Abbey Road]
This reference cd-r features the same material as the stock album. It comes in a custom title Abbey Road studio reference sleeve with Abbey Road logo front top, and typewritten filled sections "ARTIST" (MORRISSEY), "TITLE" ("BEETHOVEN WAS DEAF"), "DATE" (26/1/93) and "CAT NO" (blank). The back shows printed precautions, a warranty and Japanese text. The track listing is printed inside. The CD-R bears an Abbey Road logo at the top and has handwritten on its surface Morrissey's name, "LIVE" and the same date as on the front.
UK reference DAT [Abbey Road]
This item appears to be a DAT counterpart to the reference cassette described above. The DAT tape is a generic Sony PDP-90 with white sticker label on which is only printed Morrissey's name. The insert is a generic white Abbey Road one with, presumably, one or two extra fold-out panels (confirmation needed). The front features Morrissey's name, the album title, the catalogue numbers and the track listing's first five titles (including song lengths), all printed over a grey and yellow Abbey Road logo. The remainder of the track listing and perhaps more release information is expected to be printed over the insert's extra panel(s) (confirmation needed). Information on the insert's spine and back is also needed.
Australia CD [EMI Australasia 789061-2]
The Australian compact disc shows the usual cd variation of the artwork on the front (view left). The back is just like the back of the UK cd but the barcode box lacks the "D:", "F:" and "UK:" compartments, a white EMI logo was added on the right side immediately above the track listing and the first line in the credits at the bottom was replaced with one mentioning EMI Music Group Australasia. The spines differ from the UK spines only by the deletion of the "CDCSD 3791" catalogue number. The booklet includes the same content as its UK counterpart but the order was changed. It opens on the green tinted live shot that appears last in the UK booklet. This is followed by the first, second and third UK images but for some reason the second one is shown in mirror image. The booklet closes on the two brown pages with silver credits on the right that open the UK booklet, without any changes made to the text. The back of the booklet is also brown with a bit of silver content at the bottom, but the UK catalogue number was replaced with an EMI logo. The disc shows the expected image of Morrissey sliding off the stage, but unlike its UK counterpart it appears in a dark silvery finish with a bit of bright green text over it: an EMI logo and the catalogue number at the very bottom, a Compact Disc logo at the 4 o'clock position and a legal warning around the top edge (view left).
Australia cassette [EMI Australasia 789061-4]
The Australian cassette shows the same artwork on the front as the UK cassette (view left). The spine of the insert was redesigned to fit a barcode and it is therefore much more cluttered than the UK cassette spine. To the left of the barcode are found Morrissey's name and the album title in the same fonts and colours as on the front, but the letters of Morrissey's name are full green, not hollow. There is a grey catalogue number at the top and logos for XDR and Dolby technologies at the bottom. The back is full and can display much more content than the UK insert's back flap. It is brown with grey text consisting mainly of the track listing (which includes songwriting credits). The album title and Morrissey's name are found at the top, with the catalogue number in the top right corner. Beneath the track listing are found an EMI logo next to EMI credits, above a legal warning and a few lines about Dolby technology. The insert's first fold-out panel appears at first glance to be identical to its UK equivalent but it surprisingly features an additional dedication to Nigel Thomas in the space beneath Jo Slee's name. This dedication is not found on the UK cassette insert nor any other edition on any format. The second fold-out panel features the same green tinted live shot of Morrissey as in the UK. The reverse shows the other three expected live photos but in Australia, unlike the UK, they are out of sync with the insert's folds and are not mirrored. The cassette is made of clear plastic with pale grey text directly over it. The album title and Morrissey's name are printed in unrelated fonts at the top on each side, the Australian variation of the His Master's Voice logo is on the left, the catalogue number on the right, and logos for Dolby and XDR at the bottom.
Brazil CD [EMI Odeon 789061-2]

Brazil cassette [EMI Odeon 789061-4]
Information needed.
Brazil LP [EMI 789061]
The sleeve of the Brazilian LP is gatefold just like that of its UK counterpart. It shows on its front the same LP variation of the artwork, but without the His Master's Voice logo (view left). The back was modelled on the back of the UK sleeve but the barcode box is empty white space with only the catalogue number printed in black at the top, the His Master's Voice logo was removed and the bottom two lines of EMI/Parlophone credits were moved up to make space for an EMI logo and two lines of EMI-Odeon credits. The record is slipped inside a clear anti-static inner sleeve. The labels are yellow-beige with black text, there is an orange-red EMI logo at the very bottom and a Portuguese legal warning in the same colour around the outer edge. The track listing includes publishing numbers and songwriting credits and is split over the upper and lower halves. The album title and Morrissey's name are at the top, some letters and numbers in a box on the left, the catalogue number on the right and a few lines of credits and copyright beneath the track listing.
§
Brazil LP promo [EMI 789061]
The release of "Beethoven Was Deaf" was promoted with the help of stock copies of the LP with a yellow promo sticker on the back of the sleeve. The grey promo warning states "Advertencia: Produto Invendável Amostra Grátis Tributada Exclusivamente Promocional". The labels were stamped in red ink with the words "Promoçao Invendável".
Greece LP [HMV 7 89061 1]
Unlike its British and Brazilian counterparts, the Greek LP comes inside a single, not gatefold sleeve. It shows the same LP front artwork as in the UK but instead of being grey, the His Master's Voice logo is the same green as Morrissey's name. The back differs from the back of the UK sleeve only by the absence of the UK manufacturing line in the credits at the bottom and the addition of three Greek words printed sideways in grey to the right of the His Master's Voice logo. Because the sleeve is not gatefold, the green tinted live shot of Morrissey usually found inside the sleeve is split over both sides of the inner sleeve, which opens from the side. The labels are red with a mix of black and yellow text. There is a big retro-style EMI/His Master's Voice logo at the top with "His Master's Voice" in yellow above it. The contents of the bottom halves is printed in black: the album title next to Morrissey's name, above that side's track listing and three lines of EMI copyright. The catalogue number and publishing acronym are on the left. Two lines of yellow EMI Greece credits and legal warning are printed in English and Greek around the bottom edge.

Greece LP promo [HMV 7 89061 1]
The release of "Beethoven Was Deaf" was promoted with the help of stock copies of the LP with a promo sticker on the back of the sleeve. Details needed.
Holland CD [EMI 789061-2]
The Holland edition of "Beethoven Was Deaf" could easily be mistaken for a UK one as the only important differences between the two editions are found on the disc only. The front, back tray inlay and spines are perfectly identical (view top left of this page for front and back). Whereas the UK disc shows a green tinted live shot of Morrissey sliding off stage, with minimal grey text over it, the Dutch edition shows the same image but in a grey tint with green text. The two catalogue numbers are also found at the bottom of the disc, but there is an additional Compact Disc logo above them. There is a legal warning around the top edge, just like in the UK, but in this case it ends with the Euro publishing credits BIEM/STEMRA and "Made In Holland". To be exact, the Dutch edition differs from its UK counterpart in one other aspect, but this one is not the type one would use to recognise pressings. The contents of the booklet are exactly the same as what is found inside the UK cd booklet (view left), but the order in which they appear was changed. The Dutch booklet does not open on the two brown pages with the credits on the right, but on the first of the four green tinted live photos of Morrissey at the edge of a stage. The two brown pages with silver credits on the right follow, then the expected second green image. The final two images were reversed, the fourth one appearing before the third. The back of the booklet was left unchanged.
Israel cassette [CBS/Hed-Arzi 789061-4]
The Israel cassette shows the same front artwork as the UK cassette (view left). The spine would also be the same if it did not lack the UK catalogue number beneath the barcode number. The barcode box on the back flap lacks the UK cassette's "D:" and "F:" compartments. The credits beneath it were erased with the exception of "(P) 1993" and "© 1993" which remain in the same position. The insert's two extra fold-out panels are identical to their UK counterparts. The three images on the reverse of the insert are also the same, in mirror image just like in the UK, but six white lines of English and Hebrew credits for NMC were added to the reverse of the back flap. The cassette is made of white plastic with blue, almost purple text printed directly onto it. Morrissey's name and the album title appear at the top in the same fonts as on the front, the catalogue number in the top left corner, a His Master's Voice logo in the bottom left corner and "ACUM/BIEM" and a Dolby logo in the top right corner.
Italy CD [EMI 789061-2]
The Italian compact disc shows the usual cd variation of the artwork on the front (view left). The back is just like the back of the UK cd but the "F:" compartment within the barcode box was split in two to fit an additional "I:" box filled with the number "064". Also, the manufacturing credit at the bottom was replaced with one crediting EMI Italiana SpA. The spines differ from the UK spines only by the absence of the "CDCSD 3791" catalogue number, leaving only the barcode number. The booklet includes the same content as its UK counterpart but the order was completely reversed, which means that it opens on the fourth green tinted live shot from the UK booklet and closes on the two brown pages with silver credits (no changes made to these credits). The back of the booklet is also brown with a bit of silver content at the bottom, but the UK catalogue number was deleted. The disc shows the expected image of Morrissey sliding off the stage, but it is tinted grey just like the Holland disc, and the image was reversed (view left). Just like everywhere else there is very little text on its surface: the catalogue number at the very bottom beneath a SIAE box and "Made In Italy", and a legal warning around the top edge, all in ocean green.
Italy cassette [EMI 789061-4]
Information needed.
Japan CD [Toshiba EMI TOCP-7741]
The Japanese cd comes in a regular jewel case with white plastic tray. The front artwork is the usual cd variation, but without the His Master's Voice logo which was clumsily patched over with a copy-pasted detail from further down in the image (view left). The catalogue number is printed in a small white font in the bottom left corner. The back was modelled on the back of the UK cd but the manufacturing/Parlophone line was deleted from the credits at the bottom and the barcode box was replaced with a bigger white box with various compartments featuring EMI-related information in Japanese, a release date and logos for EMI and Compact Disc. The spines are brown like the back. They both state Morrissey's name in green, the album title in grey and the catalogue number in grey, but the left spine does it in Japanese and the right one in English. The front of the obi is partly silver with brown text in English and partly brown with a mix of silver and green text in Japanese. Its spine and back are just silver with brown text mostly in Japanese. The booklet is very thick. Just like its UK counterpart it opens on two brown pages, the left side left empty and the right side featuring credits in silver. These credits were not altered for the Japanese edition. The four green-tinted live shots of Morrissey follow, but not in the same order as in the UK (for those who need to know, the order is: third, second, first and fourth). The remainder of the booklet includes a bilingual track listing, a biography over two pages, seven pages of lyrics in English and six pages of lyrics in Japanese. These pages of text are all the same green as the live images and the text on them is white. The final page of English lyrics has a press photo image of Morrissey (the same one used on the cover of the compilation "Suedehead - The Best Of Morrissey") blended into the green background. The back of the booklet is just brown with an EMI logo and two lines of EMI credits and copyright in silver at the very bottom. Just like all other compact disc editions of "Beethoven Was Deaf", the disc in this one has its own unique design. It shows the same image of Morrissey at the edge of a stage also found in other editions, but in Japan it was saturated in grey and silver, making it almost abstract (view left). The Japanese and international catalogue numbers are printed in ocean green at the very bottom, and one line of credits in the same colour around the top edge.
§
Japan CD promo [Toshiba EMI TOCP-7741]
Promo copies are stock ones with a white and red promo sticker on the back tray insert and the words "Sample Not For Sale" stamped in black around the disc's inner ring.
Philippines cassette [EMI/Dyna 777 7 89061 4 8]
The front and spine of the insert of this edition feature a paler, washed version of the UK cassette artwork. The back flap however has nothing to do with its UK counterpart. It is full size and has two oval-shaped holes in the center for the case's prongs to go through. The background is grey with white text and white and red Dyna/EMI and Virigin logos between the holes. The track listing is found above those logos, logos for PARI (musical rights) and Dolby on the right, and a 2-line manufacturing credit at the bottom. The reverse of the insert is white and filled with black text. On the reverse of the front is found the track listing with full song-by-song credits. A 3-line copyright is printed on the reverse of the spine. Dyna/EMI and Virgin logos are printed between the two holes on the reverse of the back flap, with an EMI logo on the right. The cassette is made of black plastic and bears white paper labels with black text. The track listing appears at the top of them on each side, a His Master's Voice logo on the left, the catalogue number on the right, and Morrissey's name and the album title at the bottom in the same graphic font as on the front of the insert.
Saudi Arabia cassette [Thomsun Original EN-5219]
This item has often been mistakenly listed as being from Singapore. It shows the cd variation of the artwork on the front, over a white background, with the His Master's Voice logo blurred. Morrissey's name is printed in red at the top above the album title in grey inside a black stripe. A pink Thomsun Original logo appears in the bottom left corner and "Stereo" in black in the bottom right corner. Information on the rest of the insert and on the cassette is needed.
