29 August 1986 Open Air Theater, San Diego, CA PanicThe setlist given above corresponds to the typical main set of this leg of the "The Queen Is Dead" tour. It looks like it may be incomplete, unless the Smiths decided not to play an encore. As on earlier visits to Southern California, the band was very well received. After "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" Morrissey apologised by saying "Sorry we were late, but we missed the boat..." B-side "Stretch Out And Wait" was not released in the USA at that point in time, so most of the audience was unfamiliar with it. It therefore received a lukewarm response, which prompted Morrissey to ask "You didn't really like that one, did you?" Before going into "Cemetry Gates" he enquiringly asked "Any criticisms?" "The Queen Is Dead" was introduced with the line "Just a little social commentary... before we go..."
Live footage from this concert was shown in a newsclip on MTV's Rock'n'Roll News shortly after this gig took place. This can be found on DVD bootlegs of television material.
