9 March 1984 University Of Lancaster, Lancaster Hand In GloveThere were rumours circulating before the concert that the tour bus had crashed on the way down from Middlesbrough, and that the gig might be cancelled. It wasn't the case, the band did show up and the concert took place as planned. The University's Main Hall was packed to the rafters and the audience was very receptive. The fans broke into chants of the band's name more than once. However Morrissey wasn't too talkative and made a few mistakes. Morrissey greeted the audience after opening number "Hand In Glove". Before "Pretty Girls Make Graves" he seemed to want to say something, but couldn't get any further than "So uhmmm..." Finally his first banter of the evening came as the introduction of "Still Ill": "This is about one of the best things in life, 'Still Ill'." Morrissey started "This Night Has Opened My Eyes" in the wrong key, and instead of interrupting the song he just went "Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!" and kept on singing. After the song he replied to the numerous comments and requests from the audience with "So, does anybody have anything sensible to say... Hmm, no, I see..." The audience broke into a huge chant of "Here We Go!" during the break between the main set and the first encore, and again between the first and second encores. The fans certainly were in a singing mood, because they also sang along with Morrissey through most of "Reel Around The Fountain".
