8 November 1997 Center for Performing Arts, Gainesville, FL
MaladjustedThe first of five Florida dates went down very well. Quite a few fans made it on stage because there was no barrier holding them away them from it. Security was tight but gentle. There was an important change in the setlist. Three songs from the most recent album "Maladjusted" were re-introduced into the set: the title track as set opener, "Roy's Keen" and "Satan Rejected My Soul". They replaced "Do Your Best And Don't Worry", "The More You Ignore Me The Closer I Get" and "Hold On To Your Friends". After "Maladjusted" Morrissey commented about a wooden barrier installed between the pit seats and the back ones. Pointing at it, or perhaps at the empty gap, he said "I have to say this is the silliest thing I've ever seen". Of course, many fans interpreted this as an invitation to move forward. After "Reader Meet Author", Morrissey introduced the next number on the setlist with the words "This song is even worse... it is called 'Roy's Keen'." Throughout the evening, Morrissey seemed very interested in what happened, or possibly what didn't happen, in Gainesville. He enquired "Who was the last band to perform here" and "Who was the last English band to play here?... The Specials... ahhh". Similarly, he also enquired "What's the best thing that's ever happened here? (crowd: 'You!') It must be awfully bad here then...". He seemed to be informed about other events taking place in Gainesville that day because he also asked "Shouldn't you all be attending a homecoming game tonight?" At the end of the concert, someone ran away with Morrissey's microphone.
