"Vauxhall & I"
collectors appendix
UK CD [Parlophone CDPCSD148]
The front of the UK compact disc is similar to that of its LP counterpart but the relative position and size of the text are slightly different (view left). The back follows a similar design to the back of the LP but the various elements vary in size and position and a Compact Disc logo was added to the right side of the other logos (view left). Also, unlike the LP, the "F:" compartment and the one above it in the barcode box are filled with information. The spines are mauve with white text. They feature Morrissey's name and the album title in the same fonts as on the front, next to the barcode number. The cd tray is transparent so when the disc is taken out, the text-less back artwork image can be seen through it (view left). The booklet unfolds once for the sideways image of Morrissey which can be seen in this page's image gallery, then once again for the album's full lyrics in black over very pale mauve, followed by the songwriting and publishing credits, a Parlophone logo and a 3-line EMI copyright. The back of the booklet is mauve and filled with the track listing, full album credits and barcode number in white. The disc is black with grey text. The catalogue number appears in grey beneath the yellow Parlophone logo at the top; three lines of production credits are found on the left; a Compact Disc logo, the barcode number, "Made in the U.K.", a label code, "Stereo" and "BIEM/MCPS" on the right; the track listing including song lengths at the bottom above publishing credits, a EMI copyright and Morrissey's name; a legal warning around the bottom edge.
UK cassette [Parlophone TCPCSD148]
The front of the UK cassette shows a cropped version the usual front image, with Morrissey's name and the album title in white at the top (view left). The spine and back are mauve with mostly white text. The spine shows Morrissey's name above the album title in the same fonts as on the front, between a black Parlophone logo on the left and the catalogue number and a Dolby logo, also in black, on the right. The back flap has a multi-compartment barcode box at the centre, between the track listings for side one and side two. The insert has five extra fold-out panels. The contents usually found on the back of the cd booklet are reproduced over the first two panels, still in white over mauve, with an EMI copyright at the very bottom instead of the barcode number. The image of Morrissey usually seen in the gatefold LP and inside the cd booklet takes the space of the remaining three panels. The image of the tattoed hands and the "1OZ" necklace (also seen behind the cd tray and on the LP's inner sleeve; view left) appears in black and white over the first two panels of the reverse of the insert. The lyrics are printed in black and white over the reverse of the four other panels, spine and back flap. The leftover space at the end of the lyrics is filled with publishing credits and logos for Parlophone and Stiefel-Phillips. The cassette is made of clear plastic with pale grey text printed onto it. The release identification is found at the top (but no track listing), between the catalogue numbers and EMI copyright on the left and a Parlophone logo in the top right corner above "BIEM/MCPS".
UK LP [Parlophone PCSD148]
The UK LP sleeve is gatefold. The front of it shows the same crop of the cover photo as the front of the cd, but the relative position and size of the text are slightly different (view left). The back follows a similar design to the back of the cd but the various elements vary in size and position and there is no Compact Disc logo to the right side of the other logos (view left). Also, unlike the cd, the "F:" compartment and the one above it in the barcode box were left empty. The image of Morrissey found inside the cd booklet and on the reverse of the cassette insert appears here inside the gatefold sleeve. The record comes inside a card inner sleeve showing on one side the usual back artwork image but without text over it (view left), and on the other side the lyrics and full album credits in black over pale mauve. The lyrics side is indented at the top for easier access to the record inside. The labels are black with grey text and a yellow Parlophone logo at the top. There are three lines of production credits on the left; the barcode and catalogue numbers and the side number on the right; the track listing including song lengths at the bottom above publishing credits, a EMI copyright and Morrissey's name; a legal warning around the bottom edge.

UK CD promo [Parlophone CDPCSD148]
Shortly before the release of the album, stock copies of the compact disc were distributed to media with promotional stickers on the front and back of the case. The front sticker shows a blue Parlophone logo at the top and gives the contact information for EMI pluggers Deslyn Lewis and Kevin McCabe. There are three stickers on the back: a small one over the barcode stating "Promotional Copy Not For Sale", a big one stating "EMI New Release" and giving the release date of "14/03/94" and the last one headed "R.D.14.3", annoucing the new album and the upcoming HMV signing sessions.
UK promo cassette [Parlophone/Chop Em Out]
This item served more limited promotional purposes than the cd above, perhaps even only in-house reference purposes. It comes with a generic white Parlophone/Chop Em Out insert with Morrissey's name at the top next to the album title, above the track listings for sides A and B (tracks are numbered and followed by their length). There is a Parlophone logo in the bottom right corner. The spine is expected to give Morrissey's name and the album title (confirmation needed). The back flap is expected to show the Chop Em Out logo and contact information (confirmation needed). The cassette is a brand-less generic one with only a white sticker label at the top stating Morrissey's name.
There is a slightly different variation on this cassette out there. It more likely served reference purposes and not promotional ones, but will for the time being be listed here for convenience's sake. The insert is almost the same as the one described in the previous paragraph, but it differs by the fact that the track listing on the front is not split over two sides, the titles are not numbered and not followed by their length. The spine gives Morrissey's name and the album title and the back flap shows the Chop Em Out logo and contact information (confirmation needed). The cassette is a brand-less generic one with only a white sticker label stating Morrissey's name at the top of side one.
UK promo cassette, snippets [Parlophone/Chop Em Out?]
This variation on the above promo cassettes features only snippets from all songs featured on the album. The insert is a generic white Parlophone/(Chop Em Out?) one that is very similar to the ones described above. Next to Morrissey's name at the top is printed "Snippets Of The Album Vauxhall &I". The track listing beneath that is split over sides A and B, the titles are numbered and followed by their length. There is a Parlophone logo in the bottom right corner. Information on the insert's spine and back as well as about the cassette itself is needed.
UK promo cd "Girls + Boys" [Parlophone Very2]
The release of "Vauxhall & I" was also promoted with the inclusion of album track "Now My Heart Is Full" on a Parlophone sampler titled "Girls + Boys", alongside material by Morrissey labelmates Blur, Pet Shop Boys, US3, Electronic, Blink, etc. The front is white and shows images of a young girl and young boy making faces. The title is given beneath that, above a Parlophone logo and the subtitle "Parlophone, Stratford Upon Avon, March 1994". The jewelcase has a white plastic tray. Additional information is welcome.
UK press photos
Two different black and white 8" x 10" press photos have been sent to British media in the promotional campaign for "Vauxhall &I", either together or separately. View photo 1 and photo 2.

UK reference cassette [Abbey Road]
This Abbey Road cassette served early administrative in-house purposes. The insert is a generic Abbey Road one. Its front shows Morrissey's name, the album title, a running time, a date (24/9/93?) and perhaps more related information (but no track listing) over the pale grey and yellow Abbey Road logo. Additional information on the packaging, cassette and content is needed.
UK reference cd-r [Abbey Road]
This Abbey Road reference cd-r features the same material as the stock album. It comes in a custom title Abbey Road studio reference sleeve with Abbey Road logo front top, and typewritten filled sections "ARTIST" (MORRISSEY), "TITLE" ("VAUXHALL & I"), "DATE" (22.11.93) and "CAT NO" (blank). The back shows printed precautions, a warranty and a Transco logo. The track listing including total duration is printed inside. The CD-R bears a Transco logo at the top and has handwritten on its surface the same information as found on the front (artist, date, etc).
UK LP test pressing [Parlophone PCSD148]
Test pressings of the LP have all-white labels with nothing printed on them. The record was distributed in a generic black paper poly-lined record bag with rounded upper corners.

UK gold disc
The existence of a BPI gold record of "Vauxhall & I" has been reported. Information on this item is needed.
Argentina CD [EMI Odeon 827797-2]
The Argentinean edition of this album comes in a jewel case with transparent cd tray like almost everywhere else. The front image is the same as everywhere else but it is darker, and for some reason Morrissey's name and the album title were rewritten in white fonts that are similar but not quite the same as the original ones (view left). The track listing on the back was moved up by a bit, the barcode box lacks the four compartments beneath it and the one on the right, and the two lines of EMI copyright at the bottom were replaced with five lines of densely printed EMI Odeon credits.
Australia CD [EMI Australia 827797-2]
The Australian compact disc edition of "Vauxhall & I" was manufactured in a jewel case with clear plastic cd tray like almost everywhere else. Nowhere in the packaging is the origin mentioned. This edition is actually more or less like a UK edition with "Printed in U.K." deleted from the barcode box on the back and "Made in the U.K." omitted on the disc surface. Everything else about this release, including front artwork (view left), folded insert and back of tray image, is identical to its UK counterpart except for the text on the disc which is white as opposed to the UK's grey.
Australia cassette [EMI Australia 827797-4]
Information needed.
Brazil CD [EMI Odeon 827797-2]
The Brazilian cd edition of "Vauxhall & I" differs from its UK counterpart by only a few details on the back inlay, the back of the booklet and the disc. It was also manufactured with a transparent cd tray showing the usual "1OZ" necklace image behind it. The insert unfolds just like the UK one and features the same front artwork (view left). The only difference with it is in the presence of the catalogue number at the bottom on the back instead of the longer barcode number. The spines are also the same as in the UK except for the difference in catalogue/barcode number. The track listing on the back was moved up by a bit, the barcode beneath it does not have compartments around it, and two lines of EMI Odeon credits in black were added at the very bottom between a Compact Disc logo on the left and an EMI logo on the right. There is also a logo of a bird (that has something to do with the protection of the Amazon) above the Compact Disc one. The disc was modelled on the UK one, but a number of changes were made there as well. The UK catalogue number beneath the yellow Parlophone logo was omitted, the only text left on the right side are the Compact Disc logo and the shorter Brazilian catalogue number and credits in Portuguese are printed around the edge.
Brazil cassette [EMI Odeon 827797-4]
The Brazilian cassette bears the usual cassette artwork on the front (view left). The spine is mauve with Morrissey's name above the album title in the same fonts and colour as on the front, just like most other cassettes, there is a black Parlophone logo at the top, just like in the UK, but there is the Brazilian catalogue number and a black EMI logo at the bottom. The back flap is white with black text: the track listing on the left above one line of credits and the boxed barcode on the right. The insert has five extra fold-out panels just like in the UK. The first two are mauve with white credits like most other places (no changes in those credits), and the sideways colour image of Morrissey (view left) takes the remaining three panels. The reverse of the insert is expected to feature the usual black and white 1OZ image as well as the lyrics followed by publishing credits, with perhaps a few alterations made to the credits, but this needs to be confirmed. The cassette is made of clear plastic with grey text printed directly onto it. Morrissey's name and the album title are found top-centre, logos for Parlophone and Dolby on the left, and four lines of EMI Odeon credits in Portuguese at the bottom.
Brazil LP [EMI Odeon 827797-1]
Just like its UK counterpart, the Brazilian LP comes in a gatefold sleeve that opens on the photo of Morrissey which can be seen in the image gallery on the left of this page. The front artwork is the same as in the UK (view left). The back of sleeve differs from the back of the UK sleeve in its simpler barcode without any logo next to it and in the additional line of EMI Odeon credits ending with an EMI logo at the very bottom. There is no proper inner sleeve, just an insert showing the usual inner sleeve artwork on respective sides. The lyrics side of this insert differs from the lyrics side of the UK inner sleeve in the catalogue number in the top right corner which is not boxed. The labels are black with grey text and a big yellow Parlophone logo at the top, just like the UK labels. They differ from their latter counterpart in the album title which is printed in italics, the presence of the Brazil catalogue number on the right in place of the three usual catalogue numbers and the Portuguese credits and legal warning all around the label.
Canada CD [Sire/Reprise CDW-45451]
The Canadian compact disc shows the usual cd variation of the artwork on its front (view left). Just like its American equivalent, the barcode on the back is a simpler one than in the UK so the track listing is printed slightly lower and the label credits (which are about Sire/Warner Music Canada instead of EMI or Sire/Reprise) are printed beneath it. Also, there are Sire and Reprise logos next to the usual Stiefel-Phillips and Compact Disc ones to the left of the barcode. The spines are mauve with mostly white text. They show Morrissey's name and the album title in the same fonts as on the front, between the catalogue number in black on the left and "Sire/Reprise" in white on the right. The cd tray is transparent like almost everywhere else, so when the disc is taken out, the text-less back artwork image can be seen through it (view left). The booklet unfolds once for the sideways image of Morrissey which can be seen in the image gallery, then once again for the album's full lyrics in black over off-white, followed by the songwriting and publishing credits, Sire and Reprise logos and Sire copyright. Unlike its American counterpart, it ends with the Canadian catalogue number instead of "Made In U.S.A.". The back of the booklet is mauve and filled with the track listing and full album credits in white. While in the UK and in the USA there is a catalogue number at the very bottom of this surface, this is not the case in Canada. The disc was modelled on its American counterpart, which means that it is mauve with white text to parallel the packaging's colour scheme. Morrissey's name and the album title appear at the top of it in the same fonts as on the front, with the catalogue number in a smaller font above them. The track listing takes up the disc's bottom half, a Sire copyright is printed around the bottom edge and a legal warning and Warner Music Canada credit around the top edge.
Canada CD [Columbia House W2 45451; record club edition]
Information on how this record club edition differs from the standard retail edition described above is needed.
Canada cassette [Sire/Reprise 24 54514]
The front of the Canadian cassette shows the same artwork as the front of its UK and USA counterparts (view left). The mauve spine shows Morrissey's name above the album title in the same fonts and colour as on the front, between black Sire and Reprise logos on the left and the catalogue number and a Dolby logo, also in black, on the right. The mauve back flap has a barcode at the centre, between the track listings for side one and side two in white and above a Warner Music Canada manufacturing credit and a legal warning in black. The insert has five extra fold-out panels. The contents usually found on the back of the cd booklet are reproduced over the first two panels, still in white over mauve, with additional credits for Sire/Reprise and Dolby technology at the very bottom. These two lines of credits were actually reproduced from the American cassette but the segments crediting Reprise and Times Warner as well as "Made In U.S.A." were covered with a thick white stripe. The image of Morrissey usually seen in the gatefold LP and inside the cd booklet takes the space of the remaining three panels. The image of the tattoed hands and the "1OZ" necklace (also seen behind the cd tray and on the LP's inner sleeve) appears in black and white over the first two panels of the reverse of the insert. The lyrics are printed in black and white over the reverse of the four other panels, spine and back flap. The leftover space at the end of the lyrics is filled with publishing credits and logos for Sire, Reprise and Stiefel-Phillips. Information on the cassette itself is needed.
Canada cassette [Columbia House W2 45451; record club edition]
This record club edition differs from the retail edition described above by a few minor details here and there. The front was left unchanged. The only change on the spine was made in the catalogue number which was replaced with the Columbia House one. The Warner Music Canada credit and legal warning on the back flap were replaced with a Columbia House credit and a legal warning in black, over two lines beneath the space taken by the track listing for side one and the barcode. There may be additional differences on the insert's extra panels and its reverse (information needed). The cassette is made of clear plastic with pale grey text printed on it. The track listing appears top-centre on both sides, with the Columbia House catalogue number on the left between the logos of Sire and Reprise.

Canada CD promo [Warner Music Canada PROC 94202]
The release of this album was promoted in Canada with the inclusion of "The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get" on volume 202 of Warner Music Canada's sampler series, alongside material by 16 other artists. Like all volumes in this series, there is no front artwork (and possibly also no back artwork; to be confirmed). The disc is mostly uncoloured with only a red wedge-shaped portion top right including the Warner Music Canada name, logo, contact information and other technical info. The catalogue number and the date "March 1994" are printed in black beneath that, and the rest of the space is taken by the track listing (which includes song lengths). Other artists featured on the promo include Elvis Costello, Tevin Campbell, David Lee Roth, Inspiral Carpets, La Strada, Daran & Les Chaises, Randy Travis, Big Head Todd & The Monsters, plus eight more. Any missing info is welcome.
Canada CD promo [Warner Music Canada PROC 94217]
The release of "Vauxhall & I" was also promoted in Canada with the inclusion of the 4:10 edit of "Now My Heart Is Full" on volume 217 of Warner Music Canada's sampler series, alongside material by 9 other artists. Like all volumes in this series, there is no front artwork (and possibly also no back artwork; to be confirmed). The disc is mostly uncoloured with only a red wedge-shaped portion top right including the Warner Music Canada name, logo, contact information and other technical info. The catalogue number and the date "August 1994" are printed in black beneath that, and the rest of the space is taken by the track listing (which includes song lengths). Other artists featured on the promo include Prince, the Jesus And Mary Chain, Lisa Stansfield, Dinosaur Jr, etc. Any missing info is welcome.
Canada CD sampler "Discoveries 8" [ ]
The release of this album was also promoted with the inclusion of "The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get" on a sampler cd titled "Discoveries 8". This does not appear to be a label sampler and is presumed to have been aimed at retail. The front shows a green tinted image of tulips with the compilation title and "CD sampler" printed in yellow over it. The disc is yellow with four green drawings of tulips over which the track listing is printed. Additional information about the exact purpose of this sampler and its packaging is needed.
China CD [HSCD-005]
From the outside, the only visible difference between this unlicensed edition and the UK compact disc is found on the spines where the Chinese catalogue number was added in white inside a darker pink area on the right. The insert is a just a folded one that opens on a white surface. It shows the UK cd artwork on the front (view left) and the usual unaltered credits in white over pink on the back. The back tray artwork is perfectly identical to its UK counterpart on the outside, but the inside is white as the cd tray is a classic grey jewel case one instead of the UK's transparent variation. The disc is the most different item in this packaging. Its surface is vermillion red with everything appearing at the top of the UK disc (Parlophone logo, catalogue number and "Stereo") left uncoloured silver. The only other content on this surface is the catalogue number which is printed in the same shade of red inside a silver box on the right.
Germany press sheet
The release of "Vauxhall & I" was promoted in Germany with the help of stock copies of the British or Dutch compact disc paired with a "Compact Info" press release from EMI Germany. This press release is white with a pale blue and black "Compact Info" header and is folded to about the same size as the cd's packaging. Additional information is welcome.
Greece LP [Parlophone/EMI 827797-1]
Just like its UK counterpart, the Greek LP comes in a gatefold sleeve that opens on the photo of Morrissey which can be seen in the image gallery to the left of this page. The front artwork is the same as in the UK (view left). The back of the sleeve differs from its UK counterpart in only two minor details: the omission of "Printed in U.K." in the barcode box and an additional three-word Greek credit printed sideways in white on the edge of the bottom right corner of the sleeve. The inner sleeve is just like the UK one but the lyrics side is white instead of pale mauve and is not indented for easier access to the record inside. No changes were made to the credits or logos found there. The labels are black with grey text. They show a grey and white retro Parlophone logo at the top, the catalogue number and "A E P I" on the left and a white EMI logo at the very bottom. The bottom half is filled at maximum capacity with Morrissey's name, the album title, the track listing, songwriting and publishing credits, production credits, recording credits and EMI copyright. These generic Greek Parlophone labels were probably not meant to have so much text at the bottom as the latter EMI copyright is printed over the white EMI logo at the very bottom. Two lines of legal warning are printed around the edge, one in English and one in Greek.
§
Greece LP promo [Parlophone/EMI 827797-1]
Stock copies of the Greek LP were sent out as promos with a promotional sticker on the back of the sleeve and a press release slipped inside. The press release appears to be a single black and white page with Morrissey's name at the top in the same font as on the front of the album. Additional info on the press release and the promo sticker is needed.
Holland CD [Parlophone 827797-2]
The Holland edition of "Vauxhall & I" differs from its UK counterpart by only a few details on the back insert and on the disc. The insert is perfectly identical to the one found inside the UK cd, in the way it is folded, in the front artwork (view left), lyrics, credits, etc. The only differences on the back inlay are found around the barcode: "Printed in U.K." was replaced with "Printed in Holland" and the French price code was changed. The spines were not altered. The only differences on the disc are found on its right side: "Made in the U.K." was changed for "Made In Holland" and the publishing rights management changed from "BIEM/MCPS" to "BIEM/STEMRA".
Italy CD [EMI 827797-2]
The Italian cd differs from its UK counterpart by only two minor details: "Printed in U.K." beneath the barcode was corrected to "Printed in Italy" and "Made in the U.K." on the disc was changed to "Made In Italy". Everything else is the same as in the UK.
Italy cassette [EMI 827797-4]
Information needed.
Japan CD [Toshiba EMI TOCP-8075]
The text on the front of the Japanese cd is positioned slightly differently than it is everywhere else, and the catalogue number is printed in a white italic font in the bottom right corner (view left). The back inlay was modelled on the back of the UK cd, but the track listing is printed a bit higher, the barcode box was replaced with black EMI Japan credits in Japanese, the two lines of EMI credits were moved to the bottom and the Parlophone logo was replaced by an EMI one. The spines are mauve with white text and state Morrissey's name, the album title and the catalogue number, but the left one does it in Japanese and the right one in English. The 'booklet' unfolds just like the ones inside the UK and American compact discs, once for the sideways photo of Morrissey (view left) and once again for lyrics and publishing credits in black and white. These publishing credits are the same as in the UK, but there is no Parlophone logo beneath them. The barcode number at the bottom on the back of the booklet was replaced with an EMI logo and a Toshiba-EMI credit. There is a second insert inside, a black and white one folded in four. One side of it shows the track listing and what may be a bio, and the other side features the lyrics in Japanese. The cd tray is transparent like almost everywhere else, so when the disc is taken out, the text-less back artwork image can be seen through it (view left). The obi is mostly mauve with a mix of black and white text. The spine of the obi has discoloured to a silvery grey colour on some copies that have presumably spent a long time on a shelf. The back of the obi features a bilingual track listing and the barcode. The disc is black with white text. It shows an EMI logo at the top, three lines of production credits on the left, a Compact Disc logo and catalogue numbers on the right, the track listing, songwriting credits and Morrissey's name at the bottom, and a legal warning around the bottom edge.
§
Japan CD promo [Toshiba EMI TOCP-8075]
Promo copies are stock ones with a white and red promo sticker on the back tray insert and the words "Sample Not For Sale" stamped in black around the disc's inner ring.
Japan promo cassette [Toshiba EMI TOCP-8075]
This item is listed here as a promo although it may have served in-house reference purposes and not promotional ones. The front of the green J-card insert shows mainly the track listings for sides A and B, beneath the album title, Morrissey's name, a release date ("3/30"), the catalogue number and a price. The spine repeats the album title, the release date, the catalogue number and the price, without Morrissey's name. The back flap only shows a few lines of Toshiba-EMI credits in Japanese. The cassette is made of white plastic and bears yellow paper labels with black text. "3/30", the album title, the catalogue number for the cd and Morrissey's name are given at the top, "Toshiba EMI" in the bottom right corner and "Sample / Not For Sale" in the bottom left corner.
Korea CD [EMI/Remongsa EKPD 0392]
The Korean compact disc features the usual cd artwork on the front (view left). The back differs from the back of the UK cd by a few details. Beneath the barcode, the UK catalogue number was changed for the Korean one and "Printed in U.K." changed for "Printed in Korea". The logo for EMI/Remongsa was added to the left of the Parlophone logo and four lines of EMI/Remongsa and manufacturing credits were added beneath the EMI copyright. The track listing was moved up by a bit. A line of black Korean text is printed at the very top but this may only be present on promo copies of the album (to be confirmed). The jewel case is a traditional one with grey plastic tray instead of one with a transparent tray, so there is no artwork visible behind the disc. The UK catalogue number on the spines was replaced with the Korean one. The insert unfolds in the same fashion as the UK insert and the only changes made to it were the addition of the Korean catalogue number in white in the top right corner on its back and the fact that the lyrics are printed in black over white instead of black over very pale mauve. The disc is similar to the UK disc but there is no yellow on it. The Parlophone logo at the top is white instead of yellow and includes the Korean catalogue number instead of the UK one. The production credits on the left and the track listing and credits at the bottom are the same as in the UK, but the font in which they are printed is smaller. The technical data on the right is also printed in a smaller font, it lacks the label code and "Made in the U.K." was replaced with "Made in Korea". Finally the legal credit around the bottom edge was deleted and a Samsung Electronics manufacturing credit was added around the top edge.
Korea CD promo [EMI/Remongsa EKPD 0392]
Promo copies of the Korean "Vauxhall & I" cd are stock ones with "Sample" and Korean text printed at the top of the back tray inlay.
Malaysia cassette [EMI 8277974]
This edition is not very different to its UK counterpart. The front artwork is the same as in the UK and most other countries. The only difference on the back is in the barcode, which lacks the four compartments beneath it and the one on the right side. The spine shows an EMI logo at the top instead of a Parlophone one, the catalogue number was printed differently, and the Dolby logo was removed. Information about the inner portion of the insert is needed. The cassette is made of clear plastic with pale grey text printed onto it. Album identification and track listing are found at the top, EMI logo and catalogue number on the left, side number on the right and copyright info at the bottom.
Mexico CD [??]
The existence of this edition has been reported, but nothing is known of it. Information needed.
Philippines cassette [EMI Parlophone Dyna Productions 82779742]
This is probably the only licensed cassette of "Vauxhall & I" to feature different artwork on the front (view left). Dyna Productions used the usual compact disc artwork sideways with the part of the image showing Morrissey's hair carrying over the insert's spine. Morrissey's name and the album title are printed on the spine in the same font, colour and layout as on the front, with a white Parlophone logo at the top and the catalogue number in white at the bottom. The insert's back panel is full with two oval-shaped holes into it for the case's prongs to go through. It is black with mostly white text. It features mainly the track listing at the top, a Parlophone logo on the left, white and orange Dyna EMI and Virgin logos between the two holes, Pari (for official/legal status) and Dolby logos on the right and two lines of Dyna/EMI credits at the bottom. The reverse of the front of the insert has a very pale grey pixellated and cropped reproduction of the image of Morrissey which is found elsewhere over three extra fold-out panels of the cassette insert, with the track listing (including songwriting credits and lengths), album credits and copyright information printed over it in black. The reverse of the back panel is white with black text: a repeat of the EMI copyright at the top, logos for Dyna EMI and Virgin between the two holes, a Parlophone logo at the bottom and the letter 'M' in each of the two bottom corners. The cassette itself is made of black plastic and bears white paper labels with black text. The track listing is printed across the top of them on each side; the catalogue number on the left; Morrissey's name above the album title in the bottom left corner in similar fonts to those used on the front; logos for Parlophone, Pari and Dolby on the right; a EMI copyright in the bottom right corner.
Philippines cassette [EMI/Octoarts 8 27797 42]
It is not known whether this alternate Philippino edition of "Vauxhall & I" was produced before or after the one described above. Its packaging is much closer to that of the UK cassette than the one above. The insert has five extra fold-out panels like in the UK, and features the same front artwork (view left). The spine differs from the UK spine by the presence of a EMI logo at the top instead of a Parlophone one, the lack of a Dolby logo at the bottom and by the layout of the catalogue number. Logos for Pari and Octoarts EMI and a 2-line Octoarts credit are found on the back flap where the barcode is usually found. The track listings for side one and two are still printed in white on the left and right, but the titles are not spaced as much as in the UK. No changes were made to the credits that appear in white over mauve on the insert's first two extra fold-out panels. The usual colour image of Morrissey is again found sideways over the three other fold-out panels and the usual black and white "1OZ" image over the first two panels on the reverse, although there are Octoarts EMI logo and credits printed over the bottom right corner of the latter image. The only other alteration found on the insert is a small Digit Press printing credit above the logos in the bottom right corner of the lyrics side. The cassette is made of smokey clear plastic and bears white labels with black text. The track listing appears at the top on each side, Morrissey's name and the album title at the bottom, an EMI logo above the catalogue number on the right and a small Octoarts EMI credit in the bottom right corner.
§
Philippines promo 7" [EMI 881234-2]
The release of this album was promoted with the help of a promo-only 7" of "The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get". The promo is 2-sided but features the latter song on both sides so the two labels are identical. They are white with "Promotional Use Only Not For Sale" printed all over them in pale grey. The song title appears at the top, Parlophone and Dyna EMI logos on the right, "Murrissey" [sic] at the bottom, a promo warning and Pari Member logo on the left. The record comes in a die-cut paper record bag, sometimes black, sometimes white.
Poland cassette [Elbo 1611]
The front of the insert of this clearly unlicensed edition features a larger, cropped version of the usual cassette artwork, surrounded by a thin magenta border. Morrissey's name and the album title appear over the top of it in unrelated white fonts and a black Elbo logo in the bottom left corner. Worth noting is the typo of "Vauxhall and J" as the title, which is repeated in all instances where the correct title is meant to appear. The spine is the same shade of magenta as the border on the cover, with Morrissey's name and the title shown in black text inside a black-bordered white box, and logos and catalogue numbers either side. The inner side of the insert shows the track listing in black text on a white background, and an address and copyright notice on the reverse of the spine and fold-over tab. The track "I Am Hated For loving" is misprinted there as "I am huted for loving". The cassette itself is made of clear plastic with the Elbo and Biem Zaiks logos printed directly onto it. There is no mention of the actual contents on it.
Russia CD [EMI/Gala Records 50999-215456-2]
Although the packaging of the Russian compact disc is reasonably well done, this is still very likely an unlicensed edition. The jewel case is one with clear plastic tray like almost everywhere else. The front artwork is the usual compact disc artwork (view left). The back was modelled on the back of the UK cd but the spacing of titles in the track listing was reduced, the barcode made smaller and the two lines of EMI copyright moved up to make space for a large block of Russian credits at the bottom. An additional logo for Gala Records was also added to the right of the three other logos. The spines are mauve with white text like everywhere else but the catalogue number on them was changed for the Russian one. Information on any difference between the insert and disc and their UK counterparts is needed.
Saudi Arabia cassette [EMI/Stallions Records 8277974]
Unlike other Saudi cassettes of Morrissey or the Smiths, this one looks well packaged and its artwork reasonably faithful to that of licensed cassettes of "Vauxhall & I". The front shows the usual cassette artwork with a white Stallions logo in the bottom right corner and a white pill-shaped area in the bottom left corner containing two lines of arab text in pink and black. The spine looks like the spines of most other cassette editions, but there's a black EMI logo and a black and white Stallions logo at the top and the catalogue number at the bottom. The back flap is the same as in the UK, with a barcode at the centre with the track listing split on respective sides of it, but the barcode only has one compartment above it, none beneath or on the side. The rest of the insert is almost the same as its UK counterpart but the final one of the five extra fold-out panels is a bit narrower which means that the colour Morrissey image on one side and the black and white hands image on the reverse extend over their respective adjacent panels. Also, the black and white image on the reverse has a black and red Stallions logo and six lines of EMI and Stallions credits added to its bottom right corner. The cassette is made of clear plastic with pale grey text printed directly onto it. Morrissey's name and the album title are found top-centre on each side, with an EMI logo and the catalogue number in the top left corner and a Stallions Records logo in the bottom left corner.

South East Asia cd promo sampler [EMI Music South East Asia CDHD-003]
"The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get" was included on this EMI Virgin various artists sampler cd titled "Hit Disc 3" alongside material from other artists such as Roxette, the Rolling Stones, Richard Marx, BBM, Eternal, etc. The front has a dizzying yellow and black background of broken diagonal lines with red text printed over it: "EMI/Virgin", "Hit Disc 3", two lines of finer text and a EMI logo at the bottom. The yellow and black pattern is repeated on the back with the track listing printed in pink over it. The disc is silver with "Hit Disc" printed in large letters at the top. The exact country where this was issued is not known but it is presumed to be either the Philippines or Taiwan.
Spain LP [EMI/Parlophone 064 8 27797 1]
The Spanish LP shows the usual LP artwork on the front of its sleeve (view left). The labels are very similar to the UK ones, black with grey text and a yellow Parlophone logo at the top, but they surely differ by a number of details. Information about the rest of the packaging is needed.
Spain cassette [EMI 827797 4]
The Spanish cassette shows the usual cassette artwork on the front (view left). Information about the rest of the packaging is needed.
Sweden promo cd [EMI 881234-2]
This promo cd, consisting of a Dutch 2-track edition of "The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get" with a large white promo sticker on the back of its card slipcase, is also mentioned in the collector's appendix for "The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get" as it is clearly meant to promote the latter single as well as this album. The sticker mentions (in Swedish) the upcoming release of "Vaxhall & I" [sic], names the latter album's producer and ends with a mention of the "The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get" single.
Thailand cassette [EMI 8277974-2]
The front of this clearly unlicensed edition shows the usual cd artwork (view left) over a pink background above and below. Morrissey's name and the album title are printed one above the other at the top, in unrelated black fonts. The spine and back flap are the same pink with black text. Morrissey's name and the album title are repeated on the spine, again one above the other in the same unrelated fonts as on the front, with the catalogue number in black at the top and a red EMI logo at the bottom. The back flap features the album's track listing including song lengths and nothing else. The lyrics for side A are reproduced over one side of the insert's four extra fold-out panels, and the lyrics for side B and songwriting credits on the reverse. However these lyrics were copied from the differently laid out UK compact disc insert instead of the expected cassette one, so they are out of sync with the natural folding lines. The usual black and white image of hands and "1OZ" neckace is absent while the usual colour image of a mean-looking Morrissey was cropped to heads and shoulders only, made black and white and reproduced (not sideways) over the two leftmost panels of the reverse of the insert. The cassette is made of clear plastic with pale grey text printed directly onto it. Morrissey's name, the album title and the track listing appear at the top on each side, an EMI logo and the catalogue number on the left, and three lines of EMI copyright at the bottom.
Turkey cassette [EMI/Kent Elektronik TCP 2702]
This is expected to be an unlicensed edition, but the packaging is still of reasonably good quality and similar to the packaging of other international editions. The front shows the same cassette artwork as most other editions. The spine is mauve with Morrissey's name above the album title in white as usual, with a black Parlophone logo at the top and the catalogue number in black at the bottom. The back flap is also mauve with white text, but it is narrower than on most other editions. It features, sideways, a catalogue number, a tightly printed track listing, a barcode, an EMI copyright and three lines of Kent Elektronik credits. Two variations of the cassette have been spotted. One is made of clear plastic with blue text printed directly onto it, while the other is made of black plastic with pale grey text. The layout in both cases is exactly the same: Morrissey's name above album title in the top left corner, Parlophone logo and some number on the left, Kent Elektronik credit in the bottom left corner, a string of letters and numbers in the bottom right corner. Copies that are still sealed have a logo and "Super Stereo RAKS" printed in white on the back of the seal.
USA CD [Sire/Reprise 9 45451-2]
The American compact disc shows the usual cd variation of the artwork on its front (view left). The barcode on the back is a simpler one than in the UK so the track listing is printed slightly lower and the label credits (which are Sire/Reprise instead of EMI) are printed beneath it instead of next to it. There are still logos for Stiefel-Phillips and Compact Disc next to the barcode, but the Parlophone logo was replaced with Sire and Reprise ones. The spines are mauve with white text. They show Morrissey's name and the album title in the same fonts as on the front, between the catalogue number and "Sire/Reprise". The cd tray is transparent so when the disc is taken out, the text-less back artwork image can be seen through it (view left). The booklet unfolds once for the sideways image of Morrissey which can be seen in the image gallery, then once again for the album's full lyrics in black over very pale mauve, followed by the songwriting and publishing credits, Sire and Reprise logos and Sire copyright. The back of the booklet is mauve and filled with the track listing and full album credits in white. The only difference with the back of the UK booklet is the American catalogue number at the bottom of that surface instead of the UK/Europe barcode number. The disc was more personalized in the USA than in the UK. Instead of generic label artwork, Sire/Reprise made their disc mauve with white text to parallel the packaging's colour scheme. Morrissey's name and the album title appear at the top of it in the same fonts as on the front. The track listing takes up the disc's bottom half, and a Sire/Reprise/WEA credit is printed around the bottom edge.
USA CD [BMG Direct D164421; record club edition]
The main difference between this record club edition and the standard retail one is the fact that it was manufactured in a regular jewel case instead of one with a transparent tray showing the image usually found on the reverse of the back inlay. The front artwork was not altered. Like most other BMG Direct compact discs, there is no barcode on the back and the white box in which it is usually found contains the BMG Direct catalogue number and address. The insert is the same as in the standard edition except for the BMG Direct catalogue number printed in black at the top of its back side. The spines were not altered. The only change made to the disc was the addition of a BMG Direct credit and catalogue number in white on the left side.
USA CD [Columbia House W2 45451; record club edition]
Information on how this record club edition differs from the standard retail edition described above is needed.
USA cassette [Sire/Reprise 9 45451-4]
The front of the American cassette shows the same artwork as the front of its UK equivalent (view left). The mauve spine shows Morrissey's name above the album title in the same fonts and colour as on the front, between black Sire and Reprise logos on the left and the catalogue number and a Dolby logo, also in black, on the right. The mauve back flap has a barcode at the centre, between the track listings for side one and side two in white and above the Sire address in black. The insert has five extra fold-out panels. The contents usually found on the back of the cd booklet are reproduced over the first two panels, still in white over mauve, with additional credits for Sire/Reprise and Dolby technology at the very bottom. The lyrics are printed in black and white over the reverse of the other four panels, spine and back flap. The leftover space at the end of the lyrics is filled with publishing credits, the catalogue number and logos for Sire, Reprise and Stiefel-Phillips. The cassette itself is made of clear plastic with text printed in pale grey directly onto it. The track listing appears at the top on each side, the catalogue number on the left between Sire and Reprise logos and a Sire/Reprise credit at the bottom of side two.
USA cassette [BMG Direct C164421; record club edition]
This record club edition differs from the standard retail edition above by a few details on the spine and back flap of the insert and on the cassette. The barcode was replaced in its white box on the back by the BMG Direct catalogue number and address. The BMG Direct catalogue number was also added on the spine beneath the usual Sire/Reprise one. The insert's front, its five extra panels and its reverse were left unchanged. While the retail cassette was manufactured in clear plastic, this one is made of white plastic with black text printed directly onto it. This text is almost identical in nature and layout. The most obvious differences are the additional BMG Direct catalogue number beneath the Sire/Reprise one and the presence of a BMG Direct credit below the window on side two.

USA CD promo [Sire/Reprise 9 45451-2]
Promotion of this album was partly done with the help of stock copies of the cd with a promo warning stamped in gold on the front of the insert. These promos were presumably mostly aimed at retail.
USA CD advance [Sire/Reprise 2-45451-A]
This item was sent out to media ahead of the release of the album. It has no artwork and no front insert. The back tray inlay is white with black text. It shows mainly the track listing beneath Morrissey's name and the album title, with a promo warning in the top right corner, the catalogue number and "Advance CD" beneath the track listing and logos for Sire, Reprise and Compact Disc at the very bottom. The disc is basic silver with black text. Morrissey's name and the album title are given at the top of it; a Sire/Reprise/WEA credit in a block on the left; the track listing on the right beneath a promo warning; production credits, logos for Sire, Reprise and Compact Disc, the catalogue number, "Advance CD" and "Made In USA" at the bottom.
USA CD promo "Now My Heart Is Full: An Introspective" [Sire/Reprise PRO-CD-6778]
The promotion of "Vauxhall & I" (and more generally of Morrissey's booming popularity in the USA) was also done with the help of this career sampler covering all of his solo albums and a bit of his days with the Smiths. The cd is housed in a regular jewel case. Sire/Reprise used a promo shot of Morrissey for the sampler's front artwork (view left), a decision that was later criticised by the singer. The back is black with white text in the bottom half and a promo warning at the very top. The text at the bottom consists of Morrissey's name, the sampler title, the track listing, logos for Sire, Reprise, Compact Disc and Stiefel-Phillips and two lines of Sire/Reprise credits. The spines give Morrissey's name and the compilation title between the catalogue number and "Sire/Reprise", in white over black. The insert is a folded one giving information about the compilation's first six tracks inside on the left side, and the other six on the right side, again in white over black. A short biography of Morrissey is found on the insert's reverse in the same colour scheme as inside. The disc is black with white text which consists of Morrissey's name and the compilation title at the bottom and a Sire/Reprise credit around the top edge.
USA CD promo "Billy Budd" [Sire/Reprise PRO-CD-6966]
The release of this album in the USA was also promoted with the help of this one-track cd of album cut "Billy Budd". The disc is maroon with white text. Morrissey's name and "billy budd" are at the top. In the bottom half of the disc are found songwriting, publishing and production credits as well as a promo warning and a Sire/Reprise credit. The catalogue number is in a bolder font at the very bottom. The disc comes in a standard jewel case without a front insert. The back is a generic Reprise tray insert on which was only added Morrissey's name, the song title, its length, the catalogue numbers for both American formats of "Vauxhall & I" and a Sire logo (view left). The spines are blue with Morrissey's name and "Billy Budd" in the middle, between the catalogue number and "Sire/Reprise".
USA CD promo [Reprise]
This promo, which appears to be quite rare, has a white front and/or back insert with black text consisting of Morrissey's name, the album title, a release date, information about the label, producer, manager, publicist, booking agent and two paragraphs of praise about the album. A Reprise logo appears in the top right corner above the Reprise address in Burbank. Additional information needed.
USA promo cassette []
The existence of a promo (or perhaps an in-house reference) cassette has been reported. All that is known is that it comes with a white insert on which is printed the track listing. Additional information needed.
USA promo CD "Everybody Needs Somebody" [Sire PRO-CD-6831]
The release of "Vauxhall & I" was also promoted with the inclusion of "Used To Be A Sweet Boy" on this "Sire/Genre sampler" title "Everybody Needs Somebody", alongside material by other artists such as kd lang, Armageddon Dildos, Primal Scream, the Farm, Waterlilies, Aphex Twin, Belly, etc. The front artwork is a beige tinted image of a barechested man leaning his head on the shoulder of another, with the title at the top in blue. Information on the rest of the packaging is needed.
USA promo CD "Virtually Alternative 46" [VA-46]
The album was also promoted with the inclusion of "Billy Budd" on volume 46 of the "Virtually Alternative" sampler series, alongside material from 18 other artists such as the B-52's, Oingo Boingo, Elvis Costello, Jah Wobble's Invaders Of The Heart, Therapy?, Blur, Frente, Sonic Youth, Catherine Wheel, etc. The compilation, which was likely aimed at retail, is dated 2 May 1994. The front artwork shows a golden object set over a blue crumbled fabric with the Virtually Alternative logo in grey in the middle, the number 46 in red in the bottom left corner and the title in white at the top. The back gives the track listing and technical data (catalogue number, etc) in white over the same blue fabric background. Additional information is welcome.
USA promo video "MTV's Year In Rock" [(catalogue number needed)]
The 1994 issue of the "MTV's Year In Rock" video series which came out at the end of the year includes Morrissey footage, presumably about the signing session at the time of release of the album. Information about the packaging of this item is needed.
USA press kit
The release of the album was also promoted with the help of this press kit consisting of a 8"x 10" black and white publicity photo (view here) and a 4-page press release (or perhaps two 2-sided pages) in a Reprise folder. The press release is printed on yellow Sire paper with blue Sire logo at the top, between contact information for Sire Records in New York and Warner Bros in Burbank, with a header of Morrissey's name printed in the same font as on the front of the album. It presumably features a biography and some information on the new album. Description of the folder and additional information on the press release is needed.
USA 2-sided promo flat
A 2-sided promo flat was sent to retail at the time of release of the album. Like most other flats, this is made of card and is the size of a vinyl LP sleeve. One side shows the album's front artwork while the other shows the image usually seen on the back artwork, without any text over it except for small Sire and Reprise logos and credits in the bottom right corner. View here.
USA promo adverts 25cm x 33cm (10" x 13")
View version 1 here, view version 2 here. These adverts also served to promote the single "The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get".
USA promo poster 61cm x 97cm (24" x 38")
View here. The logos of Sire and Reprise appear in white in the bottom left corner.
USA promo poster (dimensions unknown)
View here. This variation was very likely produced for retail promotion.
USA retail informer
This is a letter-format sheet of white paper filled in black with information related to the album, including front artwork, track listing, producer, preferred tracks, Morrissey facts, etc. The barcodes for the two American formats of "Vauxhall & I" are found in the bottom right corner.
§
USA proof of compact disc artwork 58cm x 58cm (23" x 23")
A Cromalin colour proof sheet of the compact disc artwork has made it into the hands of collectors. It shows the two sides of the back tray artwork and the two sides of the unfolded insert on a white sheet, with cutting marks around them, colour bars at the top and a bit of technical data beneath each surface.
USA review copy of aborted reissue [Warner Strategic Marketing / Sire / Rhino]
In 2004 Warner Strategic Marketing / Rhino worked on a tentative reissue programme of Morrissey's first five studio albums ("Viva Hate, "Bona Drag", "Kill Uncle", "Your Arsenal", "Vauxhall & I"). These plans were shelved, but not before review copies were sent to various people involved in the project. The "Vauxhall & I" review cd features the album's basic 11-song track listing plus 5 bonus tracks: "Why Don't You Find Out For Yourself (electric)", "Black-Eyed Susan (alternate)", "Used To Be A Sweet Boy (orchestral)", "Interlude (Harmonium version)", "Swallow On My Neck (alternate)". The cd-r has a white paper label with printed information, including release identification at the top, Sire and Rhino logos at the bottom, and legal warnings on the left and at the bottom. The disc comes in a regular jewel case with clear tray. There is no front insert. The back white paper insert features the track listing, with Sire and Rhino logos at the bottom next to a legal warning.
(unknown) cassette [(no label) K 404]
This cassette of unknown origin has very minimal artwork. The front of the insert shows the usual front image at the top. Morrissey's name appears in yellow and the album title in white, both in unrelated fonts over a black background at the bottom. The spine of the insert is white with Morrissey's name in red and the album title in purple in the same unrelated fonts as on the front, with the catalogue number at the bottom in black. The back flap is white and features only the track listing (including song lengths) in black. The reverse of the insert is just white. The cassette is made of smokey transparent plastic with text printed directly onto it in a pale grey script font. None of this text is related to the content. "Compact Casset" appears in the top left corner and a white sticker with "404" in red over the text in the top right corner.
