"Bona Drag" [original edition]
collectors appendix

UK CD [HMV CDCLP3788]
The compact disc front artwork shows a cropped version of the full LP artwork (view left). The spines are black with white text. Morrissey's name and "Bona Drag" appear on the left of them in the same font as on the front, and the UK and Euro catalogue numbers appear one above the other on the right. The back features a black and white photo of Morrissey with red text and logos (view left). The track listing and EMI copyright appear in the bottom left corner, a His Master's Voice logo in the top right corner and the two catalogue numbers above the barcode in the top left corner. The insert unfolds once horizontally and then once vertically. When unfolded, one side features the complete lyrics in black over white, around a black and white image of Morrissey on the corner of Tench street. The reverse of this insert is red except for the quarter which becomes the front once folded, and except the quarter which becomes the back because it features the full album credits in a very small white font at the bottom and both catalogue numbers in white in the top right corner. The disc is a mix of uncoloured, white and black surfaces. It has a black stripe at the top with "His Master's Voice" in silver (uncoloured) inside it and five lines of EMI credits above. The right side of the disc is white and contains the catalogue numbers, the album title, the track listing, a few credits and a label code. There is a black His Master's Voice logo at the bottom and a black compact disco logo on the left.

UK CD [Parlophone 0777 794298-2]
When EMI re-released the album on their subsidiary Parlophone in 1995, a few changes were made to the packaging to remove all instances of the His Master's Voice logo and catalogue number. A white Parlophone logo was added in the bottom right corner on the front (view left). The back was barely altered. The barcode was increased in size in order to incorporate the catalogue numbers (which were changed for this release) and the red His Master's Voice logo was replaced with a black Parlophone logo. The spines remained black with white text, but the two HMV catalogue numbers were replaced with the new Parlophone one. Similarly, the two HMV catalogue numbers in the top right corner of the back of the insert were also changed for the new Parlophone catalogue number. The disc surface was completely redesigned and looks like post-1993 Morrissey releases on EMI/Parlophone: black with yellow Parlophone logo at the top and white text beneath that, including the track listing in the bottom half.

UK LP [HMV CLP3788]
View front and back LP artwork from the menu on the left. Many copies have a white round sticker with blue text on the front enticing potential buyers with the titles of the seven Morrissey singles featured on the album. While the text on the back is red for the compact disc, it is black for the LP. What is not visible on the scan of that side is the presence of a EMI copyright in a very small font in the bottom left corner. The inner sleeve shows a faded tan version of the front artwork on both sides, with the lyrics printed over. It is matte and not as thick as the inner sleeves of other Morrissey LPs. The side with the lyrics to side one is indented at the top for better grip on the record inside. It also features the album's catalogue number in the top right corner. The record bears classic His Master's Voice labels, black with most of the text in grey. A His Master's Voice logo appears at the very top above "His Master's Voice" in big red letters. The track listing, the catalogue number and various credits are found in the bottom half and more credits are printed around the edge.

UK LP [Parlophone PCS7374]
Although the Parlophone compact disc reissue added a Parlophone logo to the front artwork, this is not the case for the LP format, as the front artwork remained exactly the same (view left). The back artwork is similar but a few changes were made: the barcode was made bigger and incorporates the catalogue numbers, and the His Master's Voice logo in the bottom right corner was replaced with a Parlophone logo. The inner sleeve is actually sturdier than the one found in the HMV edition. It is made of glossy card and is indented for better access to the record on the side where the lyrics to side one are found. The catalogue number in the top right corner on that side was changed for the Parlophone one. The labels were completely redesigned and look like post-1993 Morrissey releases on EMI: black with yellow Parlophone logo at the top and pale grey text beneath that, including the track listing in the bottom half.

UK cassette [HMV TCCLP3788]
The cassette features a cropped version of the usual artwork (view left). The spine and back flap are golden with black print. The spine shows Morrissey's name and the album title in the same font as on the front, with a His Master's Voice logo at the top and the catalogue number at the bottom. The back features the track listing, a barcode and credits. The UK catalogue number and EMI credits are found on the left of the barcode and the Euro catalogue number and manufacturing credits on the right. The insert unfolds for three extra panels. The first one is golden brown and has 14 lines of credits in a very small black font at the very bottom, with nothing else above but empty space. The Morrissey image from the usual back artwork is reproduced sideways over the other two panels, with nothing printed over. The reverse of the insert is golden brown again and features the full album lyrics in black. The cassette is made of clear plastic with pale grey text printed onto it. The release identification is found at the top (but no track listing), between the catalogue number and EMI copyright on the left and a EMI logo on the right.

UK ordering information card (?)
This item looks like a promo flat, it's made of card and looks to be approximately the size of a LP, but it seems to have been used to advertise the release to whoever in the staff is responsible for stock orders. One side is filled only with text, mostly catalogue numbers for the various formats, retailer prices, release date, what appears to be a bio, and the track listing. The reverse content (if any) is unknown.

UK subway size promo poster
The existence of a subway-size promo poster has been reported. It shows the album artwork with release date at the centre, over a black background filled with text in white. Image needed.

UK various artists promo cassette
The reissue of the album on Parlophone was promoted with the inclusion of "Interesting Drug" on a various artists cassette titled "Drive! The Ultimate Cruisin' Tape" given away with a 1995 issue of Q Magazine. The cassette features only material by EMI artists having some of their albums reissued (such as Blur, Kate Bush, Kraftwerk, Paul McCartney, the Stranglers, the Buzzcocks, Blondie, etc.). The front of the insert shows the front of a car over a blue background and mentions the names of the most interesting artists on the tape, including Morrissey's. The cassette is made of clear plastic with white text printed directly onto it. It features the Q logo in the top left corner.

§

UK advance cassette [Abbey Road]
An advance Abbey Road cassette served administrative in-house purposes. The cassette is of the That's brand, black with blue text and a clear triangular window exposing one reel. It has white sticker labels with black and yellow Abbey Road logo and "Advance Cassette / Morrissey (Album)" printed on them. The insert is a generic Abbey Road one. Its front shows the album title and track listings for a-side and b-side over the pale grey and yellow Abbey Road logo. The spine content is the same as that of the sticker labels. The back of the insert shows an Abbey Road logo and the company's contact information.

UK LP test pressing [HMV CLP3788]
Test pressings for the original LP have all white (or perhaps very pale aqua?) labels with nothing written or printed on them. They come in a white paper record bag with rounded corners, the type often used as inner sleeves. Release information such as Morrissey's name, "Bona Drag" and the catalogue number is usually handwritten on this record bag.

UK LP acetate [Abbey Road]
The existence of a one-off "Bona Drag" acetate has been reported. This 2-sided acetate comes in a generic Abbey Road card sleeve showing the black and yellow Abbey Road logo spread over the 2 sides. The sleeve is die-cut to display the labels which are white with the Abbey Road logo at the top, Abbey Road contact information around the bottom edge and typewritten track listing in the bottom half.

Argentina CD [EMI-Odeon 7942982]
This compact disc was released in Argentina in 1995 or after because it was modelled on the UK-Parlophone reissue of 1995. It features the usual cd artwork on the front (view left), although in slightly richer/darker shades than elsewhere. A few alterations were made to the back inlay: the Parlophone logo was removed, the barcode was simplified and adapted to Argentina instead of the UK, the EMI credits in the bottom left corner were dropped while a block of EMI-Odeon credits and a legal warning were added to the bottom right corner. The spines were not altered. Information on the insert and the disc is needed.

Australia cassette [EMI Australia 794298-4]
The insert of the Australian cassette is made of rather thin paper. It shows the usual cassette artwork on the front (view left). The spine and back are golden brown with black text just like in the UK, but a few unusual changes were made there. The most striking alteration is the move of the barcode to the bottom of the spine, with a bit of it overlapping on the back panel. The size of Morrissey's name and of the album title on the spine was slightly shrunk in order to make space for this barcode, and the His Master's Voice logo at the top was replaced with the Australian catalogue number. Unlike most other cassette editions of "Bona Drag", the back section of this one is full and filled at maximum capacity with content: catalogue number in the top right corner, release identification, full track listing including songwriting and publishing credits, album credits including label logos and credits, etc. The insert's three extra panels are exactly the same as their UK counterparts: a first one golden brown with credits at the bottom only and the two others featuring a sideways image of Morrissey also seen on the cd and vinyl back artwork. The reverse side of the insert is also identical to the UK's, golden brown with full album lyrics. The cassette is made of clear plastic with pale grey text printed directly onto it. The album identification is found at the top, a EMI/His Master's Voice logo on the left, Dolby and XDR logos at the bottom, catalogue number on the right (so no track listing).

§

Australia promo 12" [EMI Australia RP213]
Because of its unique track listing and 'artwork', this item has made the list of Morrissey's most appealing collectibles. The justification behind of its existence is a bit of a mystery given the fact that the album only came out on cassette in Australia (compact discs and perhaps LPs may have been imported). It is also surprising that EMI Australasia decided to promote the album with the help of an EP featuring four songs that did not make the track listing. The front of the sleeve is dark green with only "Morrissey………." written diagonally in pink on the front (view left). The back is in the same colours reminiscent of the album "The Queen Is Dead". It features mainly the track listing including songwriting credits in the left half, above RPM, EMI Australasia credits and promo warning. An EMI logo appears in the bottom left corner, a His Master's Voice logo with the slogan "The Symbol Of Supremacy" at the bottom centre, and the catalogue number in the top right corner. The record comes in a clear anti-static inner sleeve. The labels are white with black text. Each side's track listing including songwriting and publishing credits appears at the top, EMI credit on the left, RPM and catalogue number on the right; Morrissey's name and promo warning at the bottom.

Austria CD [EMI CDCLP3788]
The packaging of this edition is perfectly identical to that of the original UK cd described above. The only difference is found on the disc where "Made In Austria" was added at the very bottom of the white section, below the track listing, copyright information and label code. An Austrian manufacturing credit also appears around the disc's inner ring.

Brazil CD [EMI-Odeon 368 794298 2]
The Brazilian cd displays the usual cd artwork on the front (view left). The back was modelled on the back of the original UK-HMV cd, but a few changes were made. The barcode and the catalogue numbers in the top left corner were removed, just like the two printing and manufacturing lines in the bottom left corner. The His Master's Voice logo in the top right corner was replaced with red compact disc and EMI logos and a block of Portuguese EMI-Odeon credits printed in red. The spines look like the original UK ones but the catalogue number on them is the Brazilian one. This catalogue number also replaces the UK one in the top right corner on the back of the insert. More interestingly, this insert is the only one to feature content on one of the two pages that are all red for all other cd editions. The right side of those two red surfaces was filled in Brazil with the complete track listing, including (mandatory in Brazil) publishing numbers and songwriting credits, as well as production credits and copyright information.

Brazil LP [EMI-Odeon 068 794298 1]
The Brazil LP shows the usual LP artwork on the front (view left). The back was adapted for this edition. The barcode and catalogue numbers in the top right corner were replaced with a black EMI logo and the Brazilian catalogue number. The His Master's Voice logo in the bottom right corner was replaced with 4 lines of EMI-Odeon credits in a very small black font. The inner sleeve looks the same as the one inside the original UK LP, but it is made of glossy paper and is not indented. The catalogue number was changed for the Brazilian one in the top right corner on the side where the lyrics to side one are found. The record is actually slipped inside a clear anti-static inner sleeve which is in turn slipped inside this picture inner sleeve. The labels are black with pale grey text in the bottom half and nothing in the top half. They are in fact very similar to the original UK labels, without the His Master's Voice logo in the top half, with a few corrections made to the catalogue number and credits, with publishing numbers added after each song title, and with legal text in Portuguese around the outer edge.

Brazil LP promo [EMI-Odeon 794298-1]
The release of "Bona Drag" was promoted in Brazil with stock copies of the LP with a white and red promo warning sticker on the back of the sleeve.

Brazil various artists EP promo [EMI-Odeon 9951 221]
This 8-track various artists EP featuring "November Spawned A Monster" is assumed to have served as a promo for "Bona Drag", as the latter song was not released as a single in Brazil. The record has yellow/beige labels with a pale orange EMI logo at the bottom and orange Portuguese legal credits around the outer edge. The track listing on each side is given in the bottom half of the label, with "Disco Promocional Mix Invendável" and "Varios" in the top half. The catalogue number is on the left and EMI-Odeon credit on the right. This promo 12" was distributed inside a red die-cut thin card sleeve with a white EMI logo in the bottom right corner and a white and green square sticker in the top left corner listing the contents. Copies in a blue variation of this sleeve without the contents sticker have also been spotted.

Canada CD [Sire/Reprise CD-26221]
The Canadian cd was mostly modelled on the American edition. It features the expected compact disc variation of the artwork on the front (view left). The text on the back is also red with Sire and Reprise logos as well as "AAD" beneath the barcode in the top left corner, but the credits beneath the track listing in the bottom left corner are printed in black instead of red and credit Sire and WEA Canada. The spines are red with white text: Morrissey's name and "Bona Drag" in the middle in the same font as on the front, between the Canadian catalogue number and "Sire/Reprise". The insert is very glossy, it unfolds twice like its UK and American counterparts, but the catalogue number in the top right corner on its back is the Canadian one and there are Sire and Reprise logos on the right side immediately above the paragraph of credits. The disc is uncoloured with black text. Morrissey's name and "Bona Drag" appear at the top in the same font as on the front. The track listing is given on the right, Sire and WEA Canada credits on the left, Sire and Reprise logos at the bottom alongside a compact disc logo and the catalogue number.

Canada cassette [Sire/Reprise 92 62214]
As always, the Canadian cassette was modelled on the American one. The front artwork is the usual cassette variation (view left). The spine and back flap are the same as in the USA but the catalogue number on the spine was changed for the Canadian one and the Sire address on the back was replaced with two lines of Sire Canada credit. The insert's first panel is basically the same as in the USA except for three items which were simply erased: the catalogue number beneath the Sire and Reprise logos, the first line of the bottom paragraph mentioning Reprise Records, and the words "Made in U.S.A.". The other two panels show the back artwork image of Morrissey, just like everywhere else, and the reverse of the insert features the full album lyrics in black over white, just like in the USA. The cassette itself is made of black plastic with pale grey text printed directly onto it. The text and its layout is more or less the same as in the USA, but the font and the relative size of every item is not quite the same.

Canada cassette [Columbia House W4 26221; record club edition]
This edition differs from the standard retail one described above by a few details. The front artwork was not changed. The catalogue number on the spine was changed for the Columbia House one and the order number was added above the logos on the left. The credits on the back flap were adapted for Columbia House. The cassette is made of clear plastic instead of black, but still has grey text printed directly onto it. The layout of the text there is the same as on the retail edition, but the font was changed, the credits were adapted for Columbia House and the record club's catalogue number was added in the bottom right corner.

Croatia cassette [EMI Jugoton MC-7-S 3028145]
When Croatia became a state after the end of Yoguslavia in the 1990s, the Yugoslavian cassettes originally pressed by Jugoton were made Croatian by having Croatia Records stickers applied over every occurrence of the Jugoton logo and mention. This means that this Croatian cassette is exactly like the Yugoslavian one described at the bottom of this list, but a silver and black Croatia Records sticker was applied over the Jugoton logo on the spine of the insert, and black and white stickers were applied at three places on each side of the cassette: over the logo, over the name 'Jugoton', and over 'Made in Yugoslavia'. Also, the cassette cases for this edition have the Croatia Records logo etched into the platic.

EEC CD [Fame CDFA-3280]
This edition is probably often mistaken for a UK one. Actually, nowhere on it is it stated that it was made in the EEC or that Fame is involved. However the catalogue number is a Fame one and that label is usually credited as an EEC one on other Morrissey releases (and from either the Netherlands or Germany for other artists). The front and disc are perfectly identical to their UK counterparts. The spine, back and insert look the same, but on close inspection we find that the UK catalogue number was changed for the Fame catalogue number on the spine, above the barcode on the back and in the top right corner on the back of the insert.

EEC LP [EMI 064 794298-1]
For some reason it appears that, although they were involved with the EEC cd and one of the EEC cassettes, Fame was not involved with the manufacturing of the EEC LP, or if they were, they are not credited on the packaging and the catalogue number is not from Fame's catalogue. The front artwork is the usual LP one (view left). The back of the sleeve was modelled closely on the back of the UK LP, but a few changes were made here and there. The catalogue numbers around the barcode were replaced with the one for this LP plus those of its cd and cassette counterparts. An EMI logo was added beneath the track listing for side 2 and the EMI credit in the bottom left corner was moved up a bit where it is more visible. The inner sleeve is made of paper just like in the UK, but it is not indented for easier access to the record inside and the catalogue number in the top right corner was changed for the EEC LP one. The labels feature a red retro "His Master's Voice" logo at the top and grey text in the bottom half, just like the UK labels, but the font and layout of the text were significantly changed and items such as BIEM and GEMA boxes and a label code were added. The credits around the edge are in English and German and end with "Made In EEC".

EEC cassette [Fame TCFA-3280]
The Fame cassette differs more from its UK counterpart than the Fame cd did, and unlike the latter item, Fame is mentioned here and there on its packaging. However, just like the cd, nowhere is it mentioned on this cassette that it was made in or for the European market, so it could also be easily mistaken for a UK release (see EEC cd paragraph above for further information on the subject). The front shows the expected cassette variation of the artwork (view left). The spine differs from the spine of the UK insert by the catalogue number, but also by the addition of the Fame logo above it. The back flap is just like in the UK minus the two catalogue numbers which were simply erased. The three extra panels and the reverse of the insert were untouched. The cassette is also made of clear plastic with white text. This text is basically the same as what is seen on the UK cassette except on the right side where the EMI logo was replaced with the Fame one and its position swapped with that of the side number.

EEC cassette [EMI 794298-1]
This different EEC cassette is probably related to the EEC LP described above and aimed at different European markets than the EEC-Fame cassette. It was manufactured by EMI without the involvement of Fame, and unlike the other EEC cassette, this one is actually credited as "Made In EEC". The front and spine are expected to be identical to their UK counterpart (confirmation needed; the spine may differ slightly). The back flap is the same except for the two lines of printing and manufacturing credit which were erased. Information about the rest of the insert is needed. The cassette is also made of clear plastic with pale grey text but it features the track listing at the top on each side, a HMV catalogue number and name in the top left corner and "Made In EEC" on the right side.

Greece LP [EMI 062-7942981]
The Greek LP shows the usual LP artwork on the front (view left). The back of the sleeve was only altered slightly in the bottom right corner around the His Master's Voice logo where a I.Leonardos printing credit and a EMI Greece credit were added. The inner sleeve is made of glossy card and is visually identical in appearance to its UK counterpart except for the lack of indentation and the different catalogue number on the side where the lyrics to side one are found. The labels were modelled on the original UK-HMV ones and barely altered. The block of catalogue numbers on the right was changed for another one including Greek catalogue and publishing numbers, and the manufacturing credit following the legal notice around the edge was removed.

Greece cassette [HMV 262 7942984]
This edition bears the usual UK cassette artwork on the front. The spine is the same as in the UK but white instead of golden brown and the catalogue number at the bottom is the Greek one. The back flap appears to have been left unchanged, both in colour and content. The back of the case is made of black instead of clear plastic so the cassette is not visible when the case is closed. When sealed, there is an official Greek copyright paper seal around the cassette. Information about the cassette itself is needed.

§

Greece LP promo [EMI 062-7942981]
Promo copies of the LP are stock ones with a Greek price tag-shaped promo sticker on the front of the sleeve, sometimes paired with a press release. Information on the press release is needed.

Holland CD [EMI CDP794298 2]
The packaging of this first of two Holland editions is perfectly identical to that of the original UK cd described above. The only difference is found on the disc where "Made In Holland" was added beneath the catalogue numbers and the publishing management credit "BIEM/STEMRA" was added at the bottom beneath the label code.

Holland CD [EMI CDP794298 2 / Parlophone 0777 794298 2]
This alternate Holland edition came out in 1995 or shortly after because the disc inside is the exact same one found in the 1995 Parlophone reissue (see Parlophone UK cd above for description). Unlike the previous Holland edition, the packaging of this one differs slightly from its UK counterpart, as a red box stating "Made in Holland" in white was added over the lines "Sleeve printed in England" and "Manufactured in England" in the bottom left corner on the back tray inlay. The rest of the packaging is the same as in the UK.

Israel cassette [EMI/Capitol CLP 3788-4]
From the outside this edition will be mistaken for a UK cassette as the insert is perfectly identical to the UK insert, including its extra panels and its reverse. The only difference is the cassette itself, which is white with purple text printed onto it. The catalogue number is in the top left corner, a Capitol logo in the bottom left corner, a mention of ACUM/BIEM in the top right corner above a Dolby logo and release identification at the bottom.

Italy LP [EMI Italiana 64 794298-1]
The Italian LP shows the usual LP artwork on the front (view left). Its back was modelled on the back of the UK LP, but a number of changes were made. The catalogue numbers around the barcode were changed for the Italian one, the EMI credit in the bottom left corner was moved higher to be more visible and was augmented with a EMI Italiana credit, a 'grapyche magica 2000' printers credit was added to the left of the His Master's Voice logo and three white ES logos were added over the image: one above the EMI credits in the bottom left corner, one over the fence above the track listing of side 1 and one over the building above that. Information regarding the inner sleeve and labels is needed.

Italy cassette [EMI Italiana ??]
The Italian cassette shows a cropped version of the LP artwork on the front, over a black barground (view left). Information on the rest of the insert and on the cassette itself is needed.

Japan CD [Toshiba EMI TOCP-6472]
The Japanese cd comes in a regular jewel case with white plastic tray. At first glance it looks like the front artwork is the usual cd variation, but Morrissey's name and the album title are slightly bigger and positioned slightly lower than on other cd editions (view left). Also, the catalogue number was added in a very small white font in the bottom right corner. The back artwork is modelled on the back of the UK cd, but the barcode and catalogue numbers in the top left corner and the His Master's Voice logo in the top right corner were removed and the track listing was moved up by a bit to make space for a red EMI logo and a few lines of Japanese credits at the very bottom. A red compact disc logo was also added on the right side immediately above the latter credits. While the spines are black and white in the UK and most Europeans countries, and red and white in the USA and Canada, they are blue with white text in Japan. They both state the catalogue number, Morrissey's name and the album title, but the left spine does it in Japanese and the right one in English. The obi is blue with white Japanese text on the front and spine, and white Japanese track listing, barcode and Japanese credits on the back. The Japanese compact disc is the only cd edition with a proper booklet instead of the usual insert folded in four. Its first page is a bilingual track listing including songwriting credits as well as publishing and production credits at the bottom. This is followed by three pages of what appears to be a bio, four pages of lyrics in English, one page showing the Tench street photo found elsewhere at the centre of the insert, then seven pages of Japanese lyrics and a final page of Japanese text in a box beneath a drawn Union Jack. The back of the booklet is red with white text and parallels the back of the usual insert. Seven lines of credits are printed at the bottom in a very small white font and a EMI logo and credit are found in the top left corner. The disc was modelled on the original UK disc but the colours are not the same. The thick horizontal stripe at the top is all white and does not state the usual "His Master's Voice". EMI credits are found above it in white over silver. The track listing with catalogue number, etc are still found on the right side, but in a dark grey section instead of a white one. White compact disc and EMI logos are found on the uncoloured silver left side.

§

Japan CD promo [Toshiba EMI TOCP-6472]
Promo copies are stock ones with a white and red promo sticker on the back tray insert and the words "Sample Not For Sale" stamped in black around the disc's inner ring.

Japan promo cassette [Toshiba EMI TOCP-6472]
This promo cassette presumably served advance and more limited promotional purposes than the cd above. It is made of white plastic and bears white and green Toshiba EMI labels with Morrissey's name, the album title, the catalogue number, the date "90.10.24" and a few Japanese characters printed over in black. The same information is found on the spine of the white paper insert and at the top of its front above the full album track listing in English. The insert's back flap features only a few lines of Toshiba EMI credits mostly in Japanese.

Mexico CD [EMI 794298-2]
Information on the front and back artwork and on the spines is needed. The disc looks like a bootleg disc. It is black with white text: "Morrisey" (with one 'S') at the top, "Bona Drag" at the bottom, EMI logo and catalogue number on the right and "Hecho En Mexico" on the left. The back of the insert is pink with lines of credits at the bottom and the catalogue number in the top right corner, just like on most other editions, but an eight-line legal warning in Spanish was added above the credits. Information about the rest of the insert is needed.

Mexico cassette [EMI 794298-4]
Information needed.

Portugal cassette [EMI 794298-4]
The front of the cassette insert shows the LP artwork over a white background. Above it is Morrissey's name in black in the same font as on the LP, and beneath the artwork are found a SR crest logo and "DGEDA" above "ALK". The back space is mostly used for the track listing, in black over white, with an EMI/Valentim De Carvalho logo at the bottom/rightside. The spine is white with Morrissey's name above the album title in the same black font as on the LP, the His Master's Voice logo at the top/left and the catalogue number at the bottom/right above a silver sticker. Information on the insert's inner panel(s) is needed. The cassette is made of clear plastic with text printed in white. The track listing is found at the top on each side, an elaborate EMI logo on the left beneath the catalogue number, and Portuguese credits at the bottom.

Saudi Arabia cassette [Thames Original TE 1345]
The front of this unlicensed edition shows the cd artwork on the front, in a blue box over a white background. Morrissey's name appears at the top in purple and the album title in pink. A pink Thames Original logo is found on the left side at the bottom. The spine and back are very pale blue. Morrissey's name and the album title on the spine are in the same colours as on the front, and positioned between the name of the label and the catalogue number both in black. The back features the track listing in black and nothing else. The reverse of the insert is all white. The cassette is a generic black LN60 that looks like cassettes bought blank for home usage. It has a white sticker label at the top stating Morrissey's name, the album title, the label, the catalogue number and a few other details.

Saudi Arabia cassette [Stallions TCCLP 3788]
This edition is packaged more professionally than the one described below, but it still is an unlicensed edition. The front shows the usual cassette variation of the artwork. The spine and back flap are the same as in the UK, but blue with white text instead of golden with black text. The two lines mentioning England were removed on the back flap and Dolby and Stallions logos were added on the right. The insert's first panel is the same as in the UK, but again in blue with white text instead of the usual colour scheme. The two next panels show the usual black and white image of Morrissey hugging a post. The lyrics are found on the reverse of the insert just like in the UK, but they are printed in white over black and Stallions' logo and contact information are given behind the back flap. The cassette is made of clear plastic with grey text printed directly onto it. Morrissey's name and the album title are found at the top on each side, with an EMI logo in the top left corner, catalogue number above the Dolby logo in the bottom left corner and a warning at the bottom.

Saudi Arabia cassette [Thomsun EN-3866]
The insert of this unlicensed edition shows the usual LP artwork on the front, over a white background. Morrissey's name appears in big red letters and the album title in blue above it, both in unrelated fonts. The Thomsun Original name/logo appears over the artwork in empty dark letters, and beneath it in reddish pink. The spine and back flap are pale blue with mostly black text. Morrissey's name and the album title are found one above the other in pink on the spine, with "Thomsun Original" in black on the left and the catalogue number on the right. The track listing is printed on the back. The first few songs from the beginning of side 2 were moved to the end of side 1, and bonus tracks such as "Michael's Bones" and "Sister I'm A Poet" were added at the end of side 2. The cassette is a Maxell UR60 made of black plastic which mauve technical data (of the type usually seen on blank tapes for home usage) printed onto it. Morrissey's name, the album title and the catalogue number are printed in black on thin sticker labels at the top on each side.

South Africa LP [EMI EMCJ(D)5408]
The South African LP shows the expected LP variation of the artwork on the front (view left). The back of the sleeve was modelled on the back of the original UK-HMV LP, but changes were made in every corner. The barcode was moved from the top right to the top left corner to make space for the catalogue number and a few lines mentioning the availability of this title on other formats. The small EMI credit in the bottom left corner was moved up where it is more legible and was paired with some "Seal Of Approval" logo (presumably 'approving' the legitimacy of this release). A EMI logo and a block of EMI Music South Africa credits and address were added to the left side of the His Master's Voice logo in the bottom right corner. There is no picture sleeve in this edition as the record comes in a plain white paper die-cut record bag. The labels are black with pale grey text. A big old-style His Master's Voice logo is found at the top, copyright on the left, catalogue number and RPM on the right and track listing at the bottom, with an EMI logo at the very bottom. A legal warning is found around the edge.

Spain LP [EMI-Odeón 068 79 4298 1]
The Spanish LP shows the usual LP artwork on the front (view left). The back of its sleeve looks very much like the back of the UK LP but the catalogue numbers around the barcode were replaced with the Spanish one, the EMI credit in the bottom left corner was removed and a block of Spanish EMI-Odeón credits added below the track listing for side 2. The inner sleeve is made of thin but fairly glossy paper. Its front is a bit higher than its back, helping access to the record inside, and the catalogue number in the top right corner was changed for the Spanish one. The labels were modelled on the original UK-HMV ones and barely altered. The block of catalogue numbers on the right was replaced with one which includes the Spanish catalogue number and the legal warning around the edge was changed for one in Spanish crediting EMI-Odeón.

Taiwan cassette [EMI EM 0030]
A rare occurrence: the Taiwanese cassette features the same cassette artwork on the front as all other licensed editions (view left). The spine and back of the insert are golden brown with black text. The spine shows Morrissey's name and the album title in both English and Taiwanese, with the catalogue number and two EMI logos (one in each language) at the top and a Dolby logo, a His Master's Voice logo and the UK catalogue number at the bottom. The back is full with two oval-shaped holes in it for the case's plastic prongs to go through. A black vertical line separates the English track listing and Taiwanese credits on the left from what appears to be a brief bio in Taiwanese on the right. The insert has three extra panels that are identical to the panels of the UK cassette, the first one golden with a block of credits at the bottom and the two other ones showing the sideways image of Morrissey hugging a post. The reverse of this insert features the full album lyrics like most other cassette editions, but in this case these are printed in white over black. Unlike earlier Taiwanese cassette releases of Morrissey and Smiths titles, this one does not come with a separate white paper insert. The cassette is made of black plastic and bears black labels. The text on them is pale grey: release identification and track listing at the top, His Master's Voice logo and UK catalogue number on the left, two EMI logos (one in each language) and catalogue number on the right and what may be a legal warning in Taiwanese at the bottom.

Thailand cassette [Peacock 5356]
The insert of this unlicensed edition is made of very glossy card. The front artwork was adapted from the LP artwork, it is in portrait format instead of the usual landscape cassette cropping. The blue from the background carries over to the spine and back flap. Morrissey's name appears in black on the spine above the album title, with the number 5356 at the bottom, also in black. The track listing is printed in black on the back flap. The insert has one extra panel featuring, in black and white, a press shot of Morrissey (walking, holding shirt closed) above the songwriting and production credits. The cassette is made of smokey black plastic with a bit of grey text printed directly onto it. None of this text is related to the release except for the label name in the top left corner.

Thailand? cassette [HMV TCCLP3788]
There is no country of origin mentioned anywhere on this edition, it is assumed to be from Thailand only because it has been found for sale there. The packaging is much more professional than that of the Peacock edition described above. The insert is glossy, it is modelled closely on its UK counterpart and includes the usual three extra inside panels. The front artwork is the usual cassette one. The spine, back flap and first panel are the same in appearance as in the UK except for the background shade which is closer to tan than the original gold. The spine content was not touched but the barcode, the two catalogue numbers and the two lines mentioning England were removed from the back flap. The content of the three extra panels was also left untouched, but the lyrics on the reverse are printed in white over black instead of the usual black over gold. The cassette differs more with its UK counterpart than the packaging does. It is made of charcoal plastic and bears white paper labels with black text. Album identification and track listing are found at the top, an EMI logo and the catalogue number on the left, side number on the right, and EMI copyright at the bottom. The reported copy has the side 1 label stamped "SAMPLE" in big red letters. It is not known if all copies are stamped this way.

USA CD [Sire/Reprise 9 26221-2]
The American compact disc features the usual cd artwork on the front (view left). The back was adapted from the back of the UK cd. The image was very slightly cropped at the top, the His Master's Voice logo was removed, the barcode was adapted and moved up, red Sire and Reprise logos as well as the outdated "AAD" were added beneath it, and the EMI credits at the bottom were replaced with Sire/Reprise ones. The spines were changed to red with white text. Morrissey's name and "Bona Drag" still appear on them in the same font as on the front, but they are positioned between the catalogue number and "Sire/Reprise". The insert unfolds in the same way as its UK counterpart, but the catalogue numbers on its back were changed for the American one and Sire and Reprise logos were added on the right side immediately above the lengthy paragraph of credits. The disc is uncoloured with black text. Morrissey's name and "Bona Drag" appear at the top in the same font as on the front. The track listing is given on the right, Sire and Reprise credits on the left, their logos at the bottom alongside a compact disc logo, the catalogue number and "Made In USA".

USA CD [Columbia House W2 26221; record club edition]
This first of two different record club editions shows the usual cd artwork on the front (view left), but its back, spines, insert and disc differ from the retail edition. The barcode number was changed on the back inlay and a Columbia House credit was added in the bottom left corner beneath the other credits. The Sire/Reprise catalogue number was replaced by the Columbia House one on the spine, in the top right corner on the back of the insert as well as on the disc surface. The rest of the packaging was not altered.

USA CD [BMG Direct D100578; record club edition]
There are two different variations of this record club edition. In both cases, the only differences with the standard retail edition described above are to be found on the back, insert and disc; the front and spines were not retouched. For the older variation, the barcode on the back was removed and in its white box was printed a BMG Direct catalogue number and credit. For the most recent variation, the white box does include a barcode, the BMG Direct catalogue number as well as a manufacturing address. The BMG Direct catalogue number was added in a black and much bigger font beneath the Sire catalogue number in the top right corner on the back of the insert of the first variation, but not on the second one. For both variations, the lines "Mfd for BMG Direct Marketing, Inc. under License / D100578" were added beneath the block of credits on the left side of the disc.

USA CD longbox
Until about 1992-1993, compact discs were sold in the USA in tall picture boxes. Many were destroyed after purchase, but some were salvaged and ended up in fans' collections. These boxes featured their own variation on the album artwork. View front and back of the "Bona Drag" longbox. The spines are red with white text, showing Morrissey's name and the album title in the middle, between the label names and the catalogue number.

USA cassette [Sire/Reprise 9 26221-4]
A rare occurrence: the American cassette front artwork is identical to its UK counterpart (view left). Just like in the UK, the spine and back are golden brown with black text. The His Master's Voice logo on the spine was replaced with Sire and Reprise logos, and the UK catalogue number was replaced with the American one and a Dolby logo. The back flap is less cluttered than in the UK. It features only the track listing for each side on respective sides of the barcode, plus a Sire address at the bottom. The insert also has three extra panels. The first one is golden with credits printed in black, but these are lengthier than in the UK and printed at the top. Sire and Reprise logos and credits as well as Dolby technology information are printed at the bottom. The second and third panels are identical to their UK equivalent, showing a sideways image of Morrissey holding onto a post, without any text. The reverse of the insert features the complete lyrics just like in the UK, but these are simply printed in black over white. The cassette is made of clear plastic and text is printed directly onto it in white. Release identification and the track listing are found at the top, Sire and Reprise logos and the catalogue number on the left.

USA cassette [Columbia House W4 26221; record club edition]
The Columbia House cassette differs from the standard retail edition only by a few details. The catalogue number on the spine was corrected. The barcode number on the back was changed and a Columbia House manufacturing credit was added beneath it. The catalogue number on the insert's first panel was changed. The rest of the insert (the two panels showing the image of Morrissey holding onto a post and the reverse) is identical to the standard retail edition. The Sire and Reprise credit on side 2 of the cassette itself was changed for a Columbia House manufacturing credit.

USA cassette [BMG Direct C100578; record club edition]
The BMG Direct record club edition is easily recognizable, mostly because BMG Direct Marketing credits and catalogue number were added in black on the right side of the front artwork. The BMG Direct catalogue number was also added on the spine above "Drag". The barcode was replaced in its white box on the back by the BMG Direct address. The insert's extra panels remained unchanged, but information about its reverse (the lyrics side) is needed. Further discrepancies may be found on the cassette itself (information needed).

USA cassette promo [Reprise 4-26221]
The release of "Bona Drag" was mainly promoted in the USA with the help of a Reprise promo cassette featuring the full album content. The cassette is made of clear plastic and bears pale grey paper labels on which Morrissey's name, the catalogue number and a few other bits of information were custom printed. The cassette comes in a standard all-clear case with a generic blue paper WEA Duplication insert. The track listing is found on the front of it, Morrissey's name, the catalogue number and a Reprise logo on the spine, and a promo warning as well as a WEA Manufacturing telephone number on the back.

USA promo poster 58cm x 58cm [23" x 23"]
View here. Sire/Reprise preferred the artwork to the "Piccadilly Palare" single (which they had decided not to release in the USA) to advertise the "Bona Drag" album.

USA 2-sided promo flat
Promo flats were usually sent to retail for instore promotion at the time of release of an album. They are made of thick card, the size of a LP and meant to be hanged. View front and back of the "Bona Drag" flat (better scans needed).

USA various artists CD promo [Warner Bros PRO-CD-4557]
USA various artists cassette promo [Warner Bros PRO-C-4557]
USA various artists LP promo [Warner Bros PRO-A-4557 - doubtful]
The album was also promoted via the inclusion of "Piccadilly Palare" on a promo compilation from Reprise titled "Follow Our Trax volume V: Use Alternative Routes". The front of the promo cd shows a mix of traffic signs bearing the various parts of the title and the Reprise logo, as well as a traffic cone. The catalogue number is found sideways in a very small white font in the bottom left corner. The spine and back are pink with a mix of black and white text. Most of the back is used for the track listing including, for each featured song, a note stating the album being promoted from which they were lifted. Logos for various Warner subsidiaries such as Reprise, Sire, Mute and 4AD are found on the right. The compilation is commonly found on compact disc. The existence of cassette and vinyl counterparts has been reported, although the actual existence of a LP edition is doubtful.

USA review copy of aborted reissue [Warner Strategic Marketing / Sire / Rhino]
In 2004 Warner Strategic Marketing / Rhino worked on a tentative reissue programme of Morrissey's first five studio albums ("Viva Hate, "Bona Drag", "Kill Uncle", "Your Arsenal", "Vauxhall & I"). These plans were shelved, but not before review copies were sent to various people involved in the project. The "Bona Drag" review cd features the album's basic 14-song track listing plus 5 bonus tracks: "Get Off The Stage" (alternate version), "Happy Lovers United" (unreleased), "The Bed Took Fire" (early version of At Amber), "Oh Phoney" (unreleased), "Such A Little Thing Makes Such A Big Difference" (Electric Demo). The cd-r has a white paper label with printed information, including release identification at the top, Sire and Rhino logos at the bottom, and legal warnings on the left and at the bottom. The disc comes in a regular jewel case with clear tray. There is no front insert. The back white paper insert features the track listing, with Sire and Rhino logos at the bottom, next to a legal warning.

Yugoslavia LP [EMI Jugoton LP-7-1 2028146]
The Yugoslavian LP features the expected LP variation of the artwork on the front (view left). The back of the sleeve was modelled on the back of the UK LP and very few changes were made. The barcode and the catalogue numbers in the top right corner were changed for new ones and Jugoton credits and logo were added to the left of the His Master's Voice logo in the bottom right corner. The inner sleeve looks like the UK one, it is made of rather glossy card, it is not indented and the catalogue number in the top right corner on side one was changed for the Yugoslavian one. It appears that the record may be slipped inside an anti-static inner sleeve before the picture inner sleeve. The labels are almost identical to the UK ones but the catalogue number on the right side was changed for the Yugoslavian one and the credits around the edge are in Serbo-Croatian.

Yugoslavia cassette [EMI Jugoton MC-7-S 3028145]
The Yugoslavian cassette shows the usual cassette front artwork as displayed in the gallery of this page (view left). The spine and back are golden brown with black text and differ from their UK equivalents by only a few details. The catalogue number on the spine was changed and a Jugoton logo was added above it. One of the two catalogue numbers on the back was removed and the other one was replaced with a few lines of credits in a very fine print. The insert's three extra panels are identical to their UK counterparts. The reverse of it features the full album lyrics like almost everywhere else, but in this case they are printed in white over pale orange-brown, which makes them more difficult to read. The cassette is made of semi-transparent grey plastic and bears bright orange labels. A Jugoton logo and the catalogue number are found on the left side of them and release identification at the top.

Yugoslavia 1/4" production master tapes [Jugoton]
This pair of 1/4" analogue production master tapes were made for Jugoton (the Yugoslavian label licensed to release Morrissey items at the time). They were very likely used to cut the LP and cassette described above. They would have been dubbed from a UK DAT. One tape includes the content from side 1 and the other that of side 2. The tape for side 1 comes in a red card slipcase and the one for side 2 come in a white one. Both have a technical data printout sellotaped onto it (over the box's AGFA label for the side 1 tape). Both printouts are filled with typewritten and handwritten information such as the track listing, catalogue numbers and various technical mastering data.
