"Hand In Glove"
(Morrissey/Marr)

These lyrics are transcribed in light blue as they appear in the Smiths' "Hatful Of Hollow" which is very similar to the way they appear in subsequent compilations. In the debut album, the repeated lines are not printed. These lyrics are reproduced here without permission. Variations between the printed lyrics and what is sung by Morrissey are indicated in darker text for additions and omissions are deleted.

Hand in glove
the sun shines out of our behinds

No, it's NOT like any other love
this one is different
because it's us! 1

Hand in glove
we can go wherever we please
and everything depends upon
how near you stand to me

And if the people stare
then, the people stare
I really don't know
and I really don't care
Kiss my shades... 2, 3

Hand in glove
the Good People laugh

Yes, we may be hidden by "rags"
but we have something they'll never have 4

Hand in glove
the sun shines out of our behinds 5

Yes, we may be hidden by "rags"
but we have something they'll never have 4

And if the people stare
then, the people stare
I really don't know
and I really don't care
Kiss my shades... 2, 3

So hand in glove I stake my claim
I'll fight to the last breath 6

If they dare touch a hair on your head
I'll fight to the last breath

For The Good Life is out there, somewhere
So stay on my arm, you little charmer 7

But I know my luck too well
yes, I know my luck too well
and I'll probably never see you again
I'll probably never see you again
I'll probably never see you again

1 In a few live performances of this song in late 1983, to flatter his appreciating audience, Morrissey sang this line as "This one is different because it's you".

2 Sandie Shaw doesn't sing this line in her version of the song.

3 This was never done in live performances of the song.

4 This line was only done this way on the album and single versions of the song, and in latter live performances. In early live performances (1983 to mid-1985 and occasionally later), as well as in the different Troy Tate outtakes, Morrissey sang this line as "we have something they never had". In live performances from 2002 and 2004 without the Smiths, he alternated between the two tenses.

5 In Paris at the very end of 1984 as well as throughout 1985 and 1986 Morrissey replaced this line with a repeat of "the Good People laugh".

6 Sandie Shaw sings "So hand in glove I'll stake my claim and I'll fight to the last breath" in her version of the song.

7 Sandie Shaw sings "So I'll stay on your arm 'cause you're so charming" in her version of the song.
