"Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others"
(Morrissey/Marr)

These words are transcribed without permission the way they appear in the "The Queen Is Dead" album. Additions to the printed lyrics are in darker text while omissions are striken out.

From the ice-age to the dole-age
there is but one concern 1
and I have just discovered:
some girls are bigger than others
some girls are bigger than others
some girls mothers are bigger than
other girls mothers
some girls are bigger than others
some girls are bigger than others
some girls mothers are bigger than
other girls mothers

As Anthony said to Cleopatra 2
as he opened a crate of ale:
Ooh I say...
some girls are bigger than others
some girls are bigger than others
some girls mothers are bigger than
other girls mothers.
some girls are bigger than others
some girls are bigger than others
some girls mothers are bigger than
other girls mothers

Send me your pillow
the one that you dream on
Send me your pillow
the one that you dream on
and I'll send you mine...

The one and only time the Smiths performed this song to an audience, on 12 December 1986, Morrissey added the following lines before the "Send me your pillow" verse. When he reintroduced the song in his set on the 2009 Tour Of Refusal he did it as well, but with variations noted below.

on the shop floor, there's a calendar 3
as obvious as snow
as if we didn't know
some girls are bigger than others
some girls are bigger than others
and some girls mothers are bigger than
other girls mothers
some girls are bigger than others
some girls are bigger than others
some girls mothers are bigger than
other girls mothers

1 On the first leg of the 2009 Tour Of Refusal Morrissey actually sang the slightly different "there is just one concern, and I have just discovered". On the second leg he sometimes changed the line to "and you have just discovered". On the third leg the change became standard.

2 This second verse and chorus were dropped from the post-Smiths live performances of the song.

3 Soon after re-introducing this song on the 2009 Tour Of Refusal, Morrissey changed this verse to "On the shop floor there's a calendar, and it's pointing out to you, something you never knew" or "...one thing you never knew".

Quotes

"The whole idea of womanhood is something that to me is largely unexplored. I'm realising things about women that I never realised before and 'Some Girls' is just taking it down to the basic absurdity of recognizing the contours to one's body. The fact that I've scuttled through 26 years of life without ever noticing that the contours of the body are different is an outrageous farce!"
- Morrissey, New Musical Express, 7 June 1986
