10 October 1997 Hospitality Point, San Diego, CA
The Boy Racer(order above is approximate) This concert went down generally well, Morrissey was in good form, but it was a disappointment to many. The audience was very rowdy and, as is often the case in Southern California, there was a good deal of pushing and shoving. The opening band Elcka was even booed by impatient fans. The stage was rather high, and there was a barrier between it and the crowd, so no one managed to reach their idol. The venue was an open-air one on the waterfront and the temperature was rather cold. All these factors added up to many fans being disappointed. Morrissey took the stage growling "Saaan Diego!" in a way that sounded more like "Saaan Degringo!". He was reasonably talkative throughout the evening. Some of this banter alluded to the weather: "Welcome to Winter Pops" or "Looks like a good night for a hurricane". During "The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get", as he sang "I will be at the bar with my head on the bar", Morrissey set his head on a speaker... and gave a dramatic sigh. At some point he tried to say something, but was stopped halfway through: "There was one thing I was going to say... it's... it's... (audience cheers)... Jesus Christ...". He left the stage after thanking his fans "I love you... I love you". Something else that didn't help many fans' appreciation of the concert was the fact that Morrissey had voice problems, especially during "Ambitious Outsiders". This might have been the reason why the set was shortened by an estimated two songs (very likely "The Teachers Are Afraid Of The Pupils" and another one). After 40 or 45 minutes, Morrissey went around and said a few words to each of his band members. They then played "Paint A Vulgar Picture", left for a short break and came back for the encore of "Shoplifters Of The World Unite".
