Rough Trade Compilation
[Canada Rough Trade, LP: RTS1986, CS: RTSC1986]
[Holland Rough Trade, LP: MD7982]
This is a sampler of artists signed to Rough Trade Records in the UK. The compilation was released at different times in different countries, with different track listings. In Canada (1986) and in Holland (apparently 1985) the compilation featured an otherwise unavailable live version of "Miserable Lie" taken from the Oxford Apollo on 18 March 1985. The Greek and Israel edition of the album feature common studio material by the Smiths and are therefore not mentioned here. The German and Italian editions don't include any Smiths material at all. View Canada LP, Canada cassette and Holland LP.
Animal Liberation [UK Waxtrax, LP: WAXUK25]
This album released in July 1987 features a live version of "Meat Is Murder" from Oxford Apollo on 18 March 1985. The latter live recording is also found on the reverse of the Smiths' "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore" single, but the version included on the compilation has 20 extra seconds of audience participation at the end which makes it appealing to certain collectors. It must be noted that the song only appears on the UK version of the compilation. For legal reasons, the American and Canadian editions do not feature the Smiths track (view artwork).
The Old Grey Whistle Test: The Anthems [BBC/Warner Music UK/Rhino 0577102]
This 2013 compilation of performances on the Old Grey Whistle Test programme includes the Smiths' "Bigmouth Strikes Again" from 1986.
