This album was Morrissey's critically acclaimed return after 7 years without new material. The four singles released from it all made it into the British Top 10.

A limited edition of the original edition came inside a gatefold LP-style sleeve and included a bonus DVD featuring one video and a photo gallery. In Japan the cd included 2 b-sides from the album's first single as bonus tracks. In certain countries, the artwork was cropped in order not to show the gun.

The Deluxe edition was released seven months later and included the 9 b-sides from the album's first three singles as well as video tracks and a photo gallery. In Europe this deluxe edition had the regular album on one cd and all the bonuses, music and video, on a separate enhanced cd. In the USA all 21 songs (12 regular ones + 9 b-sides) were found on cd and the video material on a bonus DVD.
