"Best...II"
collectors appendix

As stated in the credits, the European editions were "Made in Germany manufacturing Europe". All international editions were modeled after them except for the American and Canadian ones as well as the unlicensed cassettes from third world countries.

Germany/Europe CD [WEA 450990406-2]
This second of two Best Ofs released in 1992 features on the front the right half of the 'Biker Couple' artwork (view left). Most of the back shows a pink tinted close-up of a background detail from the front artwork, with track listing printed over it in black. A black stripe at the bottom features credits in white and a barcode (view left). The booklet includes the following content: a blank pink page, a black and white page of credits, two black and white pages of lyrics, two black and pink pages of lyrics, three black and white pages of lyrics and a page advertising the track listing of "Best...I". The back of the booklet repeats the close-up of a detail from the background of the front artwork. The cd surface is black with light grey text. The track listing is found at the top, label credits in the middle and release information at the bottom. The case has a Warner 'w' logo etched in the bottom right corner on the front.

The 2-cd box set which pairs this cd with "Best...I" is covered in the section dedicated to multi-title sets.

Germany/Europe cassette [WEA 450990406-4]
The male half of the 'biker couple' artwork was adapted for the cassette format (view left). The spine and back are black with white text. The back shows a track listing, a barcode and label credits. The insert unfolds into four additional panels. The first two show a pink tinted close-up of a background detail from the front artwork, with track listing and credits printed over it in black. The next two panels feature the lyrics to the album's first few songs, in black over white. The reverse of the insert features the rest of the lyrics and a pink and black advertisement for "Best...I" (its track listing and part of the artwork). The cassette itself is made of clear plastic with light grey text printed onto it.

Germany/Europe LP [WEA 450990406-1]
The front artwork of the LP is just like that of the cd but the text appears relatively smaller (view left). Most of the back shows a pink tinted close-up of a background detail from the front artwork, with track listing and label credits printed over it in black. A black stripe at the bottom features white credits and a barcode (view left). The record is slipped inside a plain white paper inner sleeve. Its labels are black with all the text in grey except for "The Smiths" which is printed in beige.

Germany/Europe LP promo [WEA 450990406-1]
Copies of the LP with a white "Promotional Copy Only Not For Resale" sticker on the back of the sleeve have been spotted.

§

Germany/Europe LP acetate [WEA 450990327-1]
A double-sided LP acetate has made it into the hands of some collectors. It has white Master Room labels with information handwritten in blue marker (such as "Smiths 9 A / The Smiths vol II / TT 24'12" for side A). Information on the sleeve is needed.

Argentina CD [WEA 450990406-2]
The front of the Argentina compact disc is identical to the front of the European cd edition it is based on. The back is almost the same, but emphasis was given to the track listing, the credits at the bottom are laid out slightly differently and include additional Warner Music Argentina credits. Information on how the insert and cd differ from their European counterpart is needed.

Argentina cassette [WEA 450990406-4]
The front of the Argentina cassette looks like its European counterpart but white Warner and WEA logos were added over it (view left). The spine shows "The Smiths" in pink and the title, catalogue number and Warner and WEA logos in white. The back features the album's track listing translated to Spanish. The reverse of the insert is white with blue track listing and credits. Again the titles are printed in their Spanish translation, with the original English title underneath in a smaller font. Information about the cassette itself is needed.

Australia CD [Warner Australia 450990406-2]
The packaging and content of the Australian cd parallels its European counterpart described above. The only differences are found on the back and on the disc. The "Made In Germany" line on the back was replaced with one mentioning Warner Music Australia and the French price code beneath the barcode was removed. Information about the disc and how it differs to its European counterpart is needed.

Australia cassette [Warner Australia 450990406-4]
The front shows the usual artwork but "The Smiths", "...Best" and "II" are grey. Information about the rest of this item is needed.

Brazil CD [WEA 450990406-2]
The Brazil cd may feature the LP version of the artwork on the front. The rest is expected to be modelled on the European cd described above, with minor adaptations in the credits (confirmation needed).

Brazil cassette [WEA 450990406-4]
Information needed.

Brazil LP [WEA 670.8278]
This is the only official vinyl edition of "Best...II" other than the European one described above and the Croatian one described below. The front artwork is the same as for the European LP but the Brazilian catalogue number appears in small print in the top right corner. The back is almost the same. It lacks the barcode and minor changes were made to the credits to account for the involvement of WEA Brazil. The record is slipped inside a clear film anti-static inner sleeve instead of a white paper one (confirmation needed). The record's labels are similar to the European ones. They are also black with grey text and "The Smiths" in beige but the layout is slightly different and there are expected corrections made to the credits.

Canada CD [Sire/Reprise CDW45097]
The Canadian cd is almost identical to its American counterpart (see description below). It only differs from it in the catalogue number on the spine and on the compact disc surface, and in the credits on the back and on the compact disc.

Canada CD [Columbia House W2 45097; record club edition]
This record club edition differs from the standard retail one described above by just a few minor details. The booklet cover is not glossy like the original is. The number beneath the barcode on the back was changed to the Columbia House order number and the credits beneath that were changed for Columbia House ones. The catalogue number on the spines was changed for the Columbia House one. The catalogue number on the left side of the disc was also changed for the Columbia House number (with "CRC" added beneath it) and the usual 4-line block of credits on the right side changed for a Columbia House distribution credit.

Canada cassette [Sire/Reprise 24 50974]
This Canadian cassette is expected to look just like its American counterpart with only minor corrections made to the catalogue number and credits (confirmation needed).

Canada cassette [Columbia House W4 45097; record club edition]
The insert to this record club edition is very similar to that of the original retail issue. The Columbia House catalogue number was added in black at the bottom of the spine in place of the original one, their order number replaced the original one in the barcode box on the back flap, and the credits beneath that were changed for Columbia House ones printed in black over white. The insert probably comes with the usual two panels featuring track listing and credits, and perhaps the lyric panels as well, but this needs to be confirmed. The cassette is made of clear plastic with grey text printed onto it: release id and track listing at the top, Columbia House catalogue number on the left between the Sire and Reprise logos, side number and Dolby logo on the right and copyright at the bottom.

Croatia LP [Croatia Records 2041392]
The sleeve of the Croatia LP is perhaps slightly thinner than its pan-European counterpart. The front is the same and the back shows additional Croatian credits and Croatia Records logo in the bottom right corner. The record is slipped in an anti-static plastic inner sleeve. The labels are just like those of the European LP but there is an extra catalogue number on them and the words "Made in Germany" were replaced with a logo.

Czechoslovakia CD [WEA 450990406-2]
The Czech cd is expected to be modelled on its European counterpart described above, with minor adaptations in the credits (confirmation needed).

Czechoslovakia cassette [WEA 450990406-4]
The Czech cassette is expected to be modelled on its European counterpart described above, with minor adaptations in the credits (confirmation needed).

Japan CD [WEA WMC5-541]
The Japanese cd is much closer in appearance to its European counterpart than the Japanese cd of "Best...I" was to the European cd of "Best...I". It shows the same front artwork as the European compact disc. The back is similar but a few alterations were made to it. The barcode was moved to the obi and the credits were adapted for WEA Japan. The obi is pink and its back is used, amongst other things, to advertise "Best...I". The first two pages inside the booklet are identical to their European counterparts. Seven pages of lyrics in English follow, but they are all on white pages, not alternating white and pink. A tracklisting in English and Japanese comes next, followed by what looks like a Japanese biography, then the lyrics in Japanese, again all on white pages. The inner side of the back page shows the same advertisement for "Best...I" that appears in the booklet with the European cd. The disc looks the same as in Europe but the credits and catalogue number were changed for the Japanese ones. The cd tray is made of white plastic.

Japan CD [1997 reissue on WEA WPCR-1272]
It is expected that besides having a different obi (khaki with white text and a red price box at the top), this reissue looks just like the original 1992 edition except for the different catalogue number. Confirmation needed. The cd tray is still made of white plastic.

§

Japan CD promo [WEA WMC5-541]
The Japanese promo cd presumably is a stock copy with a promo sticker on the back and SAMPLE etched on the cd's inner ring. Confirmation needed.

Japan various artists promo cd WEA Top Hits
A various artists promo cd titled "WEA Top Hits November 1992" featuring "The Boy With The Thorn In His Side" was dispatched to radio in order to promote "Best...II" as well as recent releases by other artists. The front artwork shows an old-style drawing of a smiling man's head over a yellow and blue background. The cd comes with a press release.

Mexico CD [WEA 450990406-2]
The Mexican cd is expected to be modelled on the European cd described above, with minor adaptations in the credits (confirmation needed).

Mexico cassette [WEA 450990406-4]
The Mexican cassette is expected to be modelled on the European cassette described above, with minor adaptations in the credits (confirmation needed).

Philippines cassette [WEA/Warner Music Philippines 450990406-4]
The insert of this edition differs from its German/European counterpart described at the top of this page by just two minor details: the bottom two lines of credits on the back flap were replaced with a Warner Music Philippines credit, and another Warner Music Philippines credit was added beneath the album title on the reverse of the back flap. The cassette itself however looks nothing like the European one. It is made of clear plastic and bears white paper labels. The text on them is black and very minimal: band name and album title at the top, WEA logo and catalogue number on the left, side number on the right and Warner Music Philippines credit at the bottom. The Warner Music Philippines name and logo are printed is silver on the cassette's top edge.

Poland cassette [WEA 450990406-4]
Information needed.

Saudi Arabia CS [Thomsum Original ??]
This unlicensed edition shows the usual compact disc artwork on the front, over a white background. The cd artwork was reproduced without the black stripe on the right, which means that the "II" in "Best...II" was lost. "The Smiths" appears in red at the top with a pink Thomsun Original logo in the bottom left corner. Information on the rest of the insert is needed. The cassette looks like the type one buys for home usage. It is made of black plastic, it has a white Thomsun Electronics label at the top and pink/mauve Thomsun logo on the left and under the reels.

Thailand cassette [WEA 90406-4]
This edition comes inside a case etched with the WEA logo. The insert is identical to its European counterpart with the exception of an additional manufacturing and distribution credit on its reverse, in the bottom right corner after the end of the lyrics. The cassette itself is made of clear plastic with pale grey text: album identification and track listing at the top, WEA and Dolby logos and catalogue number on the right, copyright at the bottom.

It is unclear whether this is a thick promo board or a card flat. It shows on the front side a perfect replica of the European LP.

A 23" x 33" poster showing a variation on the album artwork with pink band name and white album title has been seen for sale here and there. It is often found folded in eight. It is not clear whether or not this is official.

UK in-house cassette [?]
This in-house reference cassette features the same material as the final album. The insert is a generic white Chop Em Out one. It is dated 24/09/92 and has the track listing printed on the front (first 7 tracks) and the first panel (final 7 tracks). The band name and title are printed at the top and on the spine. A shiny silver WEA logo is found on the front and on the spine. The cassette itself is a "Chrome Super II" one (looking like a home usage cassette) with a "The Smiths" label glued at the top.

USA CD [Sire/Reprise 9 45097-2]
The American edition of the album features the Morrissey-designed artwork (view front and back from left menu). There is no image on the back, only a beige background with track listing, credits and legal notes in red. The design of the booklet parallels that of the international WEA edition but in different colours. It opens on a blank grey page, then credits are given on the opposite page in black and white. Lyrics follow in black and white and the reverse of the back page is used to advertise "Best...I", again in black and white. The back of the booklet is all beige with only the catalogue number in the bottom left corner. The typeset on the cd surface is almost the same as on the European cd but the text is brown and includes expected differences in credits and catalogue number.

USA CD [Columbia House W2 45097; record club edition]
Information on how this record club edition differs from the standard retail edition is needed.

USA CD [BMG Direct D100325; record club edition]
The BMG record club edition differs from the standard retail cd in only three places: the back insert, the disc and the back of the booklet. The barcode on the back insert was removed and the white box where it was found was filled with the BMG Direct catalogue number and a BMG Direct credit. These catalogue number and credit were also added on the disc beneath the 5-line block of copyright on the right. The BMG Direct catalogue number was also added in a dark blue or black typewriter-like font above the Sire catalogue number in the bottom left corner on the back of the booklet.

USA cassette [Sire/Reprise 9 45097-4]
The Morrissey-designed artwork was cropped for the cassette format (view in left menu). The spine and back are beige with red text. The back shows a track listing, a barcode and label credits. The insert unfolds into four additional panels. The first two are used to give the track listing and full credits, in red over beige. The other two features the lyrics to the album's first four songs, in the same colours. The reverse of the insert features the rest of the lyrics in black and white and a greyscale advertisement for "Best...I" (its track listing and part of the artwork). Information about the cassette itself is needed.

USA cd longbox
Until about 1993, compact discs were sold in the USA in tall picture boxes. Many were destroyed after purchase, but some were salvaged and ended up in fans collections. These featured their own variation/cropping of the album's artwork. View front from the left menu. Back artwork information and/or image is needed.

USA CD in rejected artwork [Sire/Reprise 9 45097-2]
The existence of a rejected 'proof' edition of this cd has been reported. Unlike other proofing material, this is not a printed sheet but an actual recreated package, with booklet, back insert and disc inside a cd case. It shows the usual artwork on the front, but the shade of the background is slightly more red than on the definitive version and the text is brighter red. The back is also more pink than beige. Not only does it differ in colour, but also in layout, as the barcode is different and found in the top right corner, and the compact disc logo is a made-up black and white one (probably a temporary placeholder until the artist got their hands on an official logo). The remainder of the text and logos are the same as on the definitive version. The back of the booklet is also pinkish beige. It shows the usual catalogue number in the bottom left corner, plus an additional barcode in the bottom right corner. The disc shows the usual text in the usual layout, but in ash pink over beige. A number-less barcode was added at the bottom beneath the credits and again the compact disc logo is a made-up black and white one.
